Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update
The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.
This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.
Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.

This unit aims to help history students consolidate advanced skills in ancient languages, especially through the reading of original texts in the ancient Egyptian language. |

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Accuracy of transliteration of hieroglyphic texts (Weekly translations, Translation Task, Essay)
2. Accuracy of translation (Weekly translations, Translation Task, Essay)
3. Comprehensiveness and accuracy, employing appropriate linguistic metalanguage, of grammatical commentary (Weekly translations, Lexicographical Task, Translation Task, Essay).
4. Appropriate use of secondary literature, clarity of argument, structure and expression (Lexicographical Task, Essay). The marking rubric is provided on iLearn.
Guidelines for preparing the assessment tasks as well as assessment criteria are available on iLearn. The assessment tasks are compulsory in this unit. Each assessment task has a due date and students are expected to submit their work on time.
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.
Please note that grading decisions for each assessment task will be moderated against the set criteria and standards before task results are released.

The unit is taught as a "lectorial", this means lecture and tutorial are integrated as a 3-hour block.
Each of these sessions will take place on Zoom and will also be recorded and made available on the iLearn site (if necessary). The unit website also contains additional materials and revision exercises that are designed to assist the student with continuous learning. Active engagement with the website is essential to successfully complete the unit. Discussion of items not covered in class can be conducted online via a discussion forum on the unit's iLearn site.
All students are expected to prepare for and actively participate in classes. Preparation for classes involves preparing translations of the texts to be worked through in class and doing the background reading set. A PDF of the texts to be be studied will be made available on the unit's iLearn site.
Students will need to have access to B.G. Ockinga, Concise Grammar of Middle Egyptian, 3rd edition (Mainz, 2012), as well as R. O. Faulkner's Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian and A. H. Gardiner's Middle Egyptian Grammar, for which digital copies are available. For some texts it will also be necessary to consult A. Erman & H. Grapow, Wörterbuch der Ägyptischen Sprache, which is available via the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae online (https://aaew.bbaw.de/tla) and R. Hannig, Grosses Handwörterbuch Ägyptisch-Deutsch.

EXTENSIONS
Extensions for assignments can only be granted for medical reasons or on compassionate grounds. If required, applications for extensions should be made before the assignment's due date.
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

COMPLETION OF UNIT
A student is required to achieve an overall mark of 50% or above to complete the unit satisfactorily and to submit all pieces of written work. IMPORTANT NOTE ON FINAL MARKS: Please note with respect to the marks you receive for work during the session: that the marks given are indicative only; final marks will be determined after moderation.
