Unit description Unit description

In the Bachelor of Medical Sciences capstone and PACE unit, students will consolidate their learnings from their chosen major and across majors through small group student-led activities and experiential learning to solve industry partner problems and communicate key health messages to the community. Interactive sessions with experts and industry at the forefront of topics currently dominating medical sciences will facilitate students to engage deeply with local and global health issues and research seeking solutions through medical science innovations. Students will apply this knowledge and their experiential learnings to develop information delivery strategies to engage the community. This unit involves active reflection on prior learning and translation to employability and workplace skills, and building linkages with professional communities and industries.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Reflect and articulate key knowledge and skills gained throughout the Bachelor of Medical Sciences, and apply learnings to devise strategies for transitioning from university to the workforce
  • ULO2: Consolidate information from seminars, discussions and literature on current topics in medical science and report on your evaluation

  • ULO4: Appraise strategies for working effectively both as an individual and as part of a team, with knowledge of ethical principles and professional conduct applicable for your career aspirations

General Assessment Information

Assessment submission 

Assessments must be submitted via iLearn by 11:55 pm on their due date. 

Late penalties

Late assessments are not accepted in this unit unless a Special Consideration has been submitted and approved.

Unit completion

To pass this unit students need to:

  • Achieve an overall minimum grade of 50% and have made a serious attempt at all assessments.
  • Attend a minimum of nine SGTA classes. Note that the work undertaken in classes forms the basis of the PACE internship and assessments, which cannot be completed without participation in relevant classes. A role will be taken for each class.

Work ready activities

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours

Weighting: 20%

 

Students will complete tasks associated with employability modules aimed at developing work readiness through reflection on learnings and relevance for future career aspirations.

Radio MQ - Health segment

Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: 25/9/2022
Weighting: 30%

 

Students will identify a pressing health issue or future health issue for communication in the form of a radio interview. Assessment will be based on an interview recording and a written scientific brief for the radio interviewer.

  • Analyse and interpret data on a global health issue

Partnering with industry

Assessment Type 1: Work-integrated task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours

Weighting: 50%

 

Student groups will undertake a work integrated activities with an industry partner/s and complete a group assessment task and an an assessable individual component based on industry partner needs.

  • Consolidate information from seminars, discussions and literature on current topics in medical science and report on your evaluation

Delivery and Resources

Learning and Teaching Model

BIOL3661 is delivered in a flipped classroom mode where students are required to do pre-class tasks which outlined in iLearn for each week in preparation for activities in weekly classes. Completing these tasks before weekly SGTAs will ensure that you get the best from the unit and your group.

Lectures

BIOL3661 has two scheduled online lectures per week where guest speakers relating will cover topics relating to the weekly themes. Over 80% of the lecturers in this unit are external to Macquarie University and work at other institutes. These scientists, postdocs, students and professionals are giving up their time to present information to you and to assist you with the next stages of your career. Please endeavour to attend lectures if you can and respect the time and contributions that the lecturers are providing for you. 

Small group teaching activities

In these weekly 2-hour classes students undertake small group activities, problem-based learning, and work on industry partner activities. In some weeks there are activities that need to be completed before attending class. The SGTAs are integral to completing the assessments in BIOL3661.
