This unit allows for general credit for relevant and approved postgraduate units studied at other tertiary institutions associated with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop a discipline-specific understanding of why marine science and management is necessary from a local to a global perspective
  • ULO2: Identify discipline-specific issues in marine science and/or management at local to global levels
  • ULO3: Communicate discipline-specific issues at an academic and local community level
  • ULO4: Apply communication and teamwork skills in a novel environment
  • ULO5: Evaluate and synthesise expert opinions within a discipline-specific area of marine science and/or management

General Assessment Information

BIOL8720 is a shell unit that allows for general credit for relevant and approved postgraduate units studied at the following tertiary institutions: University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Sydney.  It is part of the Masters of Marine Science and Management degree at Macquarie University.  You cannot use BIOL8720 as a shell unit for any other degree.

 To obtain general credit associated with this unit you must do the following:

  1. Apply to the external University for approval to undertake a unit of study via cross-institutional study.
  2. Apply for admission to Macquarie as a cross-institutional student, enrol in the Macquarie unit of study (BIOL8720) and pay the relevant contribution or fee for the unit to Macquarie.  Please contact Patty Hodgson (patricia.hodgson@mq.edu.au) for any help with this step.
  3. Contact me as the BIOL8720 convenor along with your Course Director letting us know that you have successfully enrolled in BIOL8720 and which cross-institutional unit of study you have also enrolled in.
  4. On successful completion, you will need to receive an official results notice/transcript from Macquarie and use this to apply for credit towards your UTS unit.

You will successfully complete a unit of study at a partner University to Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS). Admission is contingent on the availability of places available in the external unit at the time of the request.
On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Identify discipline-specific issues in marine science and/or management at local to global levels
  • Communicate discipline-specific issues at an academic and local community level
  • Apply communication and teamwork skills in a novel environment
  • Evaluate and synthesise expert opinions within a discipline-specific area of marine science and/or management

Delivery and Resources

This unit acts as a shell unit to allow relevant study at another institution. The requirements of the unit therefore vary and are directed by the convenor of the external unit being undertaken. Please ensure that you identify yourself with the external unit convenor as soon as you are enrolled and that the external convenor is aware that you are a cross-institutional student. You must also contact the BIOL8720 unit convenor early in the session with your external unit outline containing assessments and due dates. It is your responsibility to choose an external unit and to organise the enrolment into that unit within the appropriate time frame.

BIOL8720 has an iLearn page that can be accessed through ilearn.me.edu.au.  It contains important information regarding the unit and the ability to correspond with other students enrolled in BIOL8720.  iLearn is the primary way that we will communicate with you regarding BIOL8720.  Please check it for announcements and posts.
