Unit description Unit description

This unit is the final of three research units which are integrated with clinical learning in Stage 2 of the Doctor of Medicine (Doctor of Medicine). It concludes an 18-month research experience culminating in the completion and presentation of an individual research project. The unit builds on the research training embedded in Stage 1 of the Macquarie MD, MEDI8300: Research Project A, and MEDI8303: Research Project B. The research projects offered broadly focus on making a scholarly contribution to learning health systems and may include projects related to health systems development and delivery, infrastructure and resource-use in healthcare, patient safety and quality, patient and clinician experience of service delivery, patient- and professional-reported determinants of health and wellbeing, and medical education. In this unit, you will continue to work with peers involved in similar projects and your project supervisors to complete your research project and present it in the form of a written manuscript suitable for submission to a relevant journal and orally as part of a Macquarie MD research conference. The focus of this unit is interpreting and discussing the results, implications for healthcare and recommendations for future research. You will further develop and demonstrate your skills in communicating research effectively.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Complete a substantial research project within time and funding constraints (Capability 1 Scientist and Scholar).
  • ULO2: Analyse and interpret data appropriately and evaluates results with reference to existing literature (Capability 1 Scientist and Scholar).
  • ULO3: Identify strengths and weaknesses of the conduct and methodology used in the research project, implications for health care and recommendations for future research (Capability 1 Scientist and Scholar).
  • ULO4: Refine introduction, methodology and results sections of manuscript based on feedback from MEDI8300: Research Project A and MEDI8303: Research Project B (Capability 2 Clinical Practitioner).
  • ULO5: Draft discussion section of manuscript which answers the specific research question/s including generating appropriate tables and/or figures (Capability 2 Clinical Practitioner).
  • ULO6: Communicate research findings effectively in a professional and scholarly manner using both written and oral delivery modes (Capability 2 Clinical Practitioner).
  • ULO7: Discuss the implications of the research findings and future research designed to enhance health systems or healthcare broadly (Capability 3 Engaged Global Citizen).
  • ULO8: Demonstrate initiative and practice scientific and professional responsibilities including an adherence to the ethical and regulatory requirements relevant to the research project (Capability 4 Professional).

General Assessment Information

Grading

All final grades in the Macqurie MD are reviewed by the MD Course Board and Faculty Assessment Committee and ratified by the Faculty of Medicine, Health and HumanSciencesFacultyBoard.  Therefore, theyare not the sole responsibility of the Unit Convenor.  To pass this units students must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes, attempt all assessment tasks, and meet any ungraded requirements which include professionalism.

Professional Expectations

Professionalism is a key capability embedded in the Macquarie MD.  Professional Behaviour Notifications (PBN) which can be a breach (PBNB) or a commendation (PBNC) may be awarded.  PBNs will be recorded in the student's portfolio.  As part of developing professionalism, Macquarie MD students are expected to attend all small group interactive sessions.  If attendance is deemed to be of concern, the student will be referred to the Stage 2 Lead for remediation, subsequent monitoring, and recording in the portfolio.  Similarly, as part of developing professinalism, Macquarie MD students are expected to submit all work by the due date.  Late submission without prior approved extension will result in a professional behaviour notification breach (PBNB) in the portfolio.

Delivery and Resources

This unit runs concurrently with a clinical placements. All students and supervisors working on related projects will be connected using the MS Teams software. Students are expected to commit an average of 1 day a week (i.e. approx. 8 hours per week) for 20 weeks to finalise their research project under supervision. This time also includes participation in research team, including with peers and supervisor meetings along with final preparation of assessment tasks. The goal of which is to present their project to the standard of a BMJ Open paper. Oral presentation is also assessed in this unit in a peer forum.

Technology and Equipment

MQ is a BYOD environment where students are encouraged to bring their personally owned devices (laptops, tablets, etc) to class and to use these devices to access information and study.  Teaching roms are equipped with audio-visual and ICT equipment.  To study optimally when off campus you will need to have access to a reliable internet connection to retrieve unit information and engage with online resources.
