Unit description Unit description

This unit is the continuation in the second half-year of Italian Studies 1. It provides a further systematic study of the basic grammar and idiom of standard Italian. Together with Italian Studies 1, this unit is designed to reach the equivalent of matriculation level in language.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Italian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Italian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Italian at elementary level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Italian and in English.

Late Assessment Penalty

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc)Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

Online assessment covering individual book chapters. These exercises are based on the workbook material accompanying the text book.

Weekly Preparation and Participation

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task

Weighting: 5%

Weekly activities to check and confirm active engagement with course material. This includes online forum discussions.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Italian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Italian at elementary level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Oral Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 8 hours
Due: 06/11 @ 11.55pm
Weighting: 20%

Students are required to prepare and perform a role play in Italian. External students can video-record their presentation and send it to the tutor through the iLearn page. Alternatively a video conferencing session can be organised.

  • Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Italian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Italian at elementary level.

Final Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: 06/11 @ 11.55pm
Weighting: 35%

The final test covers all material studied in second semester (Ch. 6-11)

  • Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Italian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Italian at elementary level.

  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Italian and in English.

Written Tests

Due: 11/09 & 30/10 all @ 11.55pm
Weighting: 20%

These written tests cover the material present in the books chapter studied up to that point.

Required and recommended texts

The textbook set for this unit is Prego! An Invitation to Italian, 8th Edition by Graziana Lazzarino et. al., New York, 2011.

The prescribed text is essential for this unit. It comes shrink-wrapped with the Workbook. A Lab Manual is NOT required. Students are encouraged to purchase a middle size dictionary for this unit. Students intending to continue, should consider purchasing a bigger dictionary.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.
