This unit comprises a project which either reviews or develops an area of methodology or which discusses the use of statistical methods in a particular subject area.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: apply appropriate statistical models/methods in planning and carrying out a significant statistical analysis project.
  • ULO2: demonstrate a deep understanding of statistical theory and methods.
  • ULO4: communicate methods used and results obtained in a clear and concise manner suitable for a non-statistical audience.
  • ULO3: use modern statistical software packages in data analysis.
  • ULO5: demonstrate the ability to undertake a statistics project independently.

General Assessment Information

Students who cannot submit on time due to illness or misadventure should apply for Special Consideration.

A consistent penalty will be applied for late submissions as follows for students without an approved Special Consideration:

A 12-hour grace period will be given after which the following deductions will be applied to the awarded assessment mark: 12 to 24 hours late = 10% deduction; for each day thereafter, an additional 10% per day or part thereof will be applied until five days beyond the due date. After this time, a mark of zero (0) will be given.

Perform an analysis of a data set/simulation study and write a substantial report. Where appropriate a literature review should also be included.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • apply appropriate statistical models/methods in planning and carrying out a significant statistical analysis project.
  • demonstrate a deep understanding of statistical theory and methods.
  • communicate methods used and results obtained in a clear and concise manner suitable for a non-statistical audience.
  • use modern statistical software packages in data analysis.
  • demonstrate the ability to undertake a statistics project independently.

Delivery and Resources

In Week 1 a data set will be provided by the Unit Convenor.

Every student enrolled in this offering of the unit should attend the scheduled weekly Student Consultation. Please see the timetable for details. Attendance will be recorded.

There is no group work in this unit.

8 Complete the introduction, methods and results sections.
9 Additional work that needs to be completed.
10 Start first draft of the project report.
11 Submit the first draft of the project report on iLearn.
12 Submit the second draft of the project report on iLearn.
13 Last minute questions.
