Unit description Unit description

This unit seeks to further develop students' skills in reading, writing, speaking and comprehension. The unit provides the framework students can build upon to communicate effectively in Croatian and to immerse themselves in contemporary Croatian culture. Working towards levels A2 in the CEFR. Students with basic knowledge of Croatian are encouraged to enrol.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Croatian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Croatian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Croatian at elementary level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic. 

 

To be very clear:

  • Unless you have applied for special consideration and had your application approved, for each day your assignment is late, 5 marks will be deducted. For example, if you submit your assignment 7 days late, 35 marks will be deducted.
  • If your assignment is more than 7 days late (including weekends), you will get 0 marks for your assignment.

These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due date.

This assessment task will be delivered in separate online quizzes. Quizzes consist of both closed (e.g. multiple-choice, matching) and open type questions (e.g. filling the gaps, short answer) and are based on the unit content covered in class and/or online.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Croatian at elementary level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

Written Assignment

This assessment will be delivered in separate assignments. Students will need to answer a set of questions based on the lecture content covered in class and/or online.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Croatian language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Croatian at elementary level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

Oral Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: 16.00-18.00 27/10/2022; 18.00-20.00 31/10/2022
Weighting: 20%

 

Oral Presentation is to be delivered in the end of the term. It can be done in person (on-campus) or online. Students are required to prepare a short speech on a familiar topic in advance and present it to the class. In the second part of the presentation, students will need to answer several simple questions asked by the examiner and/or peers.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Croatian language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate some aspects of Croatian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

Final test online

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: 16.00-18:00 03/11/2022
Weighting: 30%

 

This final test assesses the content of the whole unit and consists of both closed (e.g. multiple-choice, matching) and open type questions (e.g. filling the gaps, short answer). It also includes reading comprehension and writing section. Students will complete their final test online.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Croatian at elementary level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

This unit provides advanced learners with the opportunity to work towards language skills at level A2, the second level on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Through engagement with the Croatian language in a range of contexts, the unit invites you to develop the ability to

  • understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
