Unit description Unit description
This is an intermediate Russian unit, which is designed to further broaden students' knowledge of the Russian language. It provides various activities for developing Russian reading, comprehension, writing and speaking skills. The main aim of the unit is to improve students' ability to communicate in Russian in a variety of real-life situations and to understand and appreciate Russian culture, with a focus on vocabulary, and language fluency as well as on the grammatical accuracy of Russian.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Russian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Russian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Russian at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

General Assessment Information

Rubrics and indicative samples are provided in iLearn as additional guidance on standards of achievement for different assessment types.

All assessment tasks are compulsory and must be submitted on time. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

Written grammar and vocabulary test

The purpose of the written test is to check students’ knowledge of all aspects of grammar and vocabulary that they learn.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Russian at intermediate level.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

Final online test

The purpose of the written examination is to check students’ knowledge of all aspects of grammar and vocabulary that they learn throughout the semester.Student will complete their final test online

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Russian language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Russian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Russian at intermediate level.
  • Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

Oral test

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: 11:00-13:00 3/11/22
Weighting: 45%

 

For the oral test, students have to prepare a three-minute talk on a topic of their choice. Students will be assessed on their presentation, as well as their ability to answer follow-up questions. This will be a part of regular seminar time. Online students will do this task via Zoom.

Participation

Weighting: 10%

 

Students have to demonstrate their knowledge and engagement with material explained during the semester via quizzes and other activities.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required.
