Unit description
This unit will consider practices and experiences of mobility, focusing on contemporary technologies and cultures. Mobile and ubiquitous media technologies, particularly mobile phones, and the cultural practices and meanings around their development and use, will be a particular focus of discussion. What cultural assumptions underpin the development of mobile technologies and apps, and the platforms they draw on. What forms of identity, understandings of the body, and ways of using these technologies, are offered to those using mobile technologies, and how might these be changing? What are the cultural meanings of the way data flows from mobile technologies to users' peers, professionals, governments and corporations. How do these flows of data enhance or undermine justice, shape bodies and relationships. This consideration of technologies of mobility, and the identities linked to them, will be framed within broader considerations of the cultural consequences of media; "travelling ideas"; and movements of people, migrants, tourist and refugees. |

Late Assessment Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.
This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

The lecture for Mobile Cultures will be delivered face to face on campus, with recordings made available on ilearn. Lectures will be interactive and active participation will be welcomed! The lecture is scheduled for 11-12 on Wednesdays in tutorial room 150 at 11 Wally's Walk.
Both face to face and zoom tutorials will be offered. The face to face tutorial is scheduled to run from 1-2 on Wednesdays in room 386, 14 Eastern Road. Online tutorials will be from 2-3 on Wednesdays. The zoom link will be available on ilearn. If you are enrolled in the face to face class but are required to isolate you will be able to attend the zoom class.
Please check timetables before the beginning of semester to ensure there have been no changes to timetabling or room booking.
Announcements will be made on ilearn if public health orders or the tutor's ill health require any variations to scheduled face to face classes. For those attending face to face classes, please make sure you check ilearn for announcements before travelling to Macquarie on Wednesdays.

Topics for 2022 include migration and mobile phones; pandemics, mobility and immobility; self-tracking, quantification and mobile health; mobile technology, surveillance and transparency; Pokemon, gamification and urban spaces; youth culture, automobility and mobile media; dating apps; disability and inclusive mobile technology; mobile phones, intimacy and safety; mobile media, development and post-colonialism.
Tutorials for this unit will begin in Week 2.
