Unit description Unit description
This is an intermediate Russian unit, which is designed for students with the knowledge of Russian that is equivalent to one year of studying the language at university level. The unit seeks to further develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in Russian, as well as to expand students' knowledge of contemporary Russian culture. Students are encouraged to use their language skills to communicate in a variety of situations and contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Russian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Russian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

Rubrics and indicative samples are provided in iLearn as additional guidance on standards of achievement for different assessment types.

All assessment tasks are compulsory and must be submitted on time. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.

No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

The purpose of the test is to check students’ knowledge of all aspects of grammar and vocabulary that they learn throughout the session. This will be held as a part of regular seminar time.

  • Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Russian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at intermediate level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

Final online test

Students have to demonstrate their knowledge and engagement with material explained during the session. This will be a part of regular seminar time and preparation time.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Russian language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Russian at intermediate level.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Russian and in English.

Oral test

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 0 hours
Due: 13:00 3/06/22
Weighting: 45%

 

For the oral test, students have to prepare a short talk on a topic of their choice. Students will be assessed on their presentation, as well as their ability to answer follow-up questions. This will be held as a part of regular seminar time and online students will do this activity via Zoom.

Participation

Students have to demonstrate their knowledge and engagement with material explained during the session. Students are expected to spend time on daily review of grammar and vocabulary. Students should be familiar with and feel comfortable with each week’s content before starting a new week. Seminar preparation time also includes time to study, revise seminar content and prepare for the quizzes and tests.
