Unit description Unit description
This unit is designed to further develop skills in all areas of Japanese language (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to a higher level of proficiency. Students further develop the ability to discuss a wider range of topics as well as substantially increase their knowledge of vocabulary and kanji. This unit continues to focus on further increasing students' skills in intercultural communication so that they will be able to communicate in a manner which is culturally as well as linguistically appropriate. Interactive tutorials and the use of online resources provide students with opportunities to use Japanese as much as possible.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

Students will undertake short quizzes to assess comprehension of the weekly content.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.

Mid-semester Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: 23:59 on Sunday 18/09/2022
Weighting: 20%

 

The mid-semester test covers the unit content in the first half of the session.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at intermediate level.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.

Oral Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 5 hours
Due: 23:59 on Sunday 30/10/2022
Weighting: 20%

 

Students will discuss a given topic in Japanese, using the contents and skills they have learned in the unit.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at intermediate level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.

Final Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: 23:59 on Sunday 06/11/2022
Weighting: 25%

Delivery and Resources

No textbook is required for this unit. Seminar notes (Grammar & Kanji), seminar presentation slides, and other materials are available for downloads in iLearn.

Completion of assessment tasks will also require a computer with Japanese fonts enabled. Basic computer skills (e.g., internet browsing) and skills in word processing in Japanese and English are required.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.
