Unit description Unit description

This unit introduces students to Japanese literary works and is designed to enhance their understanding of Japanese literature in linguistic, socio-cultural and historical contexts. The unit will cover the ancient to the current period through diverse texts such as poetry and all forms of narratives including i-novels, fantasies and thrillers. It will also examine rich intertextuality found in Japanese literature, as exemplified in manga/anime works inspired by the Japanese classical masterpiece, The Tale of Genji.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Demonstrate an insight into Japanese literary works from different genres.
  • ULO2: Understand the intertextuality of Japanese literature and apply this to your analysis of specific literary work.
  • ULO3: Generate informed and original analysis of Japanese literature and articulate this in a clear and focused manner in oral and written form.
  • ULO4: Demonstrate initiative and competence in research, including locating relevant materials and writing in an efficient and timely manner with correct referencing.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

This task comprise a set of small tasks, including weekly in-class and online discussions, an essay presentation and peer-reviews of the presentations.

  • Generate informed and original analysis of Japanese literature and articulate this in a clear and focused manner in oral and written form.

This task requires you to complete weekly quizzes.

  • Understand the intertextuality of Japanese literature and apply this to your analysis of specific literary work.

Retelling narratives

Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: 25/09/2022, 23:55
Weighting: 30%

 

This task is for you to produce your own creative work inspired by one classical Japanese literary work (e.g., poetry, folktale and the Tale of Genji), and make a video presentation to demonstrate your creative work, then discuss it analytically. You are also required to complete the self-assessment.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an insight into Japanese literary works from different genres.
  • Understand the intertextuality of Japanese literature and apply this to your analysis of specific literary work.
  • Generate informed and original analysis of Japanese literature and articulate this in a clear and focused manner in oral and written form.
  • Demonstrate initiative and competence in research, including locating relevant materials and writing in an efficient and timely manner with correct referencing.

Essay

Assessment Type 1: Essay
Indicative Time on Task 2: 35 hours
Due: 06/11/2022, 23:55
Weighting: 35%

 

This task requires you to write a fully referenced essay, as instructed.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an insight into Japanese literary works from different genres.
  • Understand the intertextuality of Japanese literature and apply this to your analysis of specific literary work.
  • Generate informed and original analysis of Japanese literature and articulate this in a clear and focused manner in oral and written form.
  • Demonstrate initiative and competence in research, including locating relevant materials and writing in an efficient and timely manner with correct referencing.

Mobile devices alone are not sufficient. Completion of assessment tasks may also require a computer with Japanese fonts enabled. Basic computer skills (e.g., internet browsing) and skills in word processing in Japanese and English are required.
