Language Teaching Methodologies is a highly practice-focused unit. It focuses on designing and implementing classroom language learning activities and developing the skills and knowledge to teach language skills. The practical sessions classroom management; selecting adequate materials for language teaching and learning. The unit is based on the essential skill of reflection on one's own practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Apply current theory and practice of English language teaching to the evaluation, modification and/or design of language learning resources and activities
  • ULO2: Analyse key dimensions of a group of learners to support them appropriately in carrying out language learning tasks and activities
  • ULO3: Apply current pedagogical and English language teaching theory to teaching specific groups of language learners
  • ULO4: Apply principles of reflective practice to the process of language learning task design and language teaching to identify areas for development
  • ULO5: Demonstrate competence in using various classroom management techniques to manage the classroom learning environment for a range of second language learners

Microteaching activities

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: Throughout the semester

Engagement with the following throughout the session:

  • Create and post three short microteaching activities in a video format.
  • Complete the preparatory tasks.
  • Comment on other students' videos.
  • Post reflections.

Evaluating ELT Materials

Assessment Type 1: Report

Develop a coursebook evaluation checklist and evaluate ELT tasks/activities.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Apply current theory and practice of English language teaching to the evaluation, modification and/or design of language learning resources and activities
  • Analyse key dimensions of a group of learners to support them appropriately in carrying out language learning tasks and activities
  • Demonstrate competence in using various classroom management techniques to manage the classroom learning environment for a range of second language learners

Evaluating ELT

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Week 13
Weighting: 50%

 

Evaluation of your own teaching - plan, conduct, reflect and critique. Submit a video and a reflective report/commentary.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Analyse key dimensions of a group of learners to support them appropriately in carrying out language learning tasks and activities
  • Apply current pedagogical and English language teaching theory to teaching specific groups of language learners
  • Apply principles of reflective practice to the process of language learning task design and language teaching to identify areas for development
  • Demonstrate competence in using various classroom management techniques to manage the classroom learning environment for a range of second language learners

Delivery and Resources

Students who are enrolled in the online delivery are required to engage with the pre-recorded lectures, unit readings and lecture tasks each week. Students are also expected to do independent research using the library resources, and to search, select and analyse texts used in ESL contexts. Face-to-face seminar recordings are available after the scheduled lecture via Echo360.

Resources are available through the iLearn website for this unit. Technologies used include video, Echo360 and other online resources.

Results published on platform other than eStudent, (eg. iLearn, Coursera etc.) or released directly by your Unit Convenor, are not confirmed as they are subject to final approval by the University. Requesting an extension to assignment due date

On occasion, you may be in a situation when you aren't able to submit an assessment task on time. Extensions are only given in special circumstances, by completing a Special Consideration request. Late submission of assignments

If you haven't been approved for an extension and you submit your assessment task late, penalties are applied. You should consult your unit convenor if you are in this position. Late submissions will receive a 5% per day penalty. If you submit the assessment task 10 days or more beyond the due date, without an approved extension, you will be awarded a maximum of 50% of the overall assessment marks. Weekends and public holidays are included.
