Unit description Unit description

In this unit you will explore the tensions between multilingual practices and monolingual ideologies, and their social consequences. You will discover that linguistic diversity is a fundamental, yet widely overlooked, fact of language in social life. You will engage with a wide variety of case studies of language and culture contact from around the world and examine connections to educational disadvantage and social exclusion.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify, describe, and explain key phenomena in language and culture contact
  • ULO2: Identify, describe, and critically evaluate key concepts and theories related to language and culture contact
  • ULO3: Identify, describe, and explain the social consequences of language and culture contact in different communities, across time and space, particularly in the field of education
  • ULO4: Communicate advanced knowledge and understanding of socially relevant aspects of language and culture contact to diverse audiences

You will have to undertake 10 writing tasks throughout the term in response to prompts. Each task will be valued 3%.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe, and explain key phenomena in language and culture contact
  • Identify, describe, and critically evaluate key concepts and theories related to language and culture contact
  • Identify, describe, and explain the social consequences of language and culture contact in different communities, across time and space, particularly in the field of education
  • Communicate advanced knowledge and understanding of socially relevant aspects of language and culture contact to diverse audiences

Quiz 1-10

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Weekly
Weighting: 50%

 

You will have to undertake 10 quizzes throughout the term. Each quiz will be valued 5%.

  • Identify, describe, and explain the social consequences of language and culture contact in different communities, across time and space, particularly in the field of education

Media presentation

Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Individual due dates in second half of semester
Weighting: 20%

 

You will have to undertake a group assignment and present their findings in a variety of oral and digital formats.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe, and explain key phenomena in language and culture contact
  • Identify, describe, and explain the social consequences of language and culture contact in different communities, across time and space, particularly in the field of education
  • Communicate advanced knowledge and understanding of socially relevant aspects of language and culture contact to diverse audiences
