Unit description Unit description

This unit examines the key issues currently facing all service and manufacturing organisations creating products across global markets. The primary aim of the unit is to illustrate the impact globalisation has on the value transformation process both within the organisation and across its value chain. The unit analyses in detail the link between globalisation and an organisation's competitive strategy, the management of its operations, the design of its products and processes, and the management of its supply chains, inventory and logistics.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify, describe and analyse the concept of globalisation and value chain management.
  • ULO2: Evaluate critical issues in sustainability and global value chain management.
  • ULO3: Design and critique solutions to the real-life cases in contemporary global value chain environment.

General Assessment Information

Late submissions of assessments 

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, no extensions will be granted. There will be a deduction of 10% of the total available assessment-task marks made from the total awarded mark for each 24-hour period or part thereof that the submission is late. Late submissions will only be accepted up to 96 hours after the due date and time.

No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g., quizzes, online tests.

Special Consideration 

To request an extension on the due date/time for a timed or non-timed assessment task, you must submit a Special Consideration application. An application for Special Consideration does not guarantee approval.

The approved extension date for a student becomes the new due date for that student. The late submission penalties above then apply as of the new due date.

This assessment is worth 30% in total. It is a 1,500 word individual essay.

  • Identify, describe and analyse the concept of globalisation and value chain management.

Mid-session Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: Week 7
Weighting: 30%

 

This assessment is worth 30% in total. It is a two-hour, open book, mid-session test.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe and analyse the concept of globalisation and value chain management.
  • Evaluate critical issues in sustainability and global value chain management.

Group Report

Assessment Type 1: Report
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Week 8-13
Weighting: 40%

 

This assessment is worth 40% in total (20% allocated to group performance and 20% allocated to group individual presentation). It is a 3,000 word group report.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe and analyse the concept of globalisation and value chain management.
  • Evaluate critical issues in sustainability and global value chain management.
  • Design and critique solutions to the real-life cases in contemporary global value chain environment.

Many of the issues covered in this unit can be found in Journals, newspapers, and business periodicals such as Asia Wall Street Journal, Far East Economic Review, Australian Financial Review, Business Review Weekly, Sydney Morning Herald, etc. Students are expected to read these on a regular basis. Students can access this from the university library.
