Unit description
In the Bachelor of Medical Sciences capstone and PACE unit, students will consolidate their learnings from their chosen major and across majors through small group student-led activities and major projects to solve industry partner problems. PACE partners are embedded within this unit and students do not need to find individual placements. Interactive sessions with experts at the forefront of topics currently dominating medical sciences will facilitate students to engage deeply with local and global health issues and research seeking solutions through medical science innovations. Students will apply this knowledge and their experiential learnings over the course of the degree to develop information delivery strategies to engage the community in current medical sciences issues. This unit involves active reflection on prior learning and translation to employability and workplace skills, and building linkages with professional communities and industries. Visit Employability Connect for important information and resources relating to this unit. |

Learning and Teaching Model
BIOL3661 is delivered in a flipped classroom mode where students are required to do pre-class tasks which outlined in iLearn for each week in preparation for activities in weekly classes. Completing these tasks before weekly SGTAs will ensure that you get the best from the unit and your group.
Seminar - (starting week 1)
BIOL3661 has a scheduled online seminar where guest speakers, including PACE partners will cover topics relating to the weekly themes. Some seminars will be pre-recorded and weekly classes will then be discussion sessions with the presenter. Please be mindful that these scientists, postdocs, students and professionals are giving up their time for you and to assist you with the next stages of your career. Please endeavour to attend seminars and respect the time and contributions that the lecturers are providing for you.
Workshop (online - starting week 1)
The weekly online workshops comprise fortnightly dicussions on employability modules and your career progression and alternate weeks enable groups to meet with industry partner representatives to discuss projects and ask questions. A schedule will be provided in iLearn and a PACE meeting appointment system will be used for effective use of PACE partner and student time.
Small group teaching activities (face to face starting in week 1)

This year we removed lectures and added online seminars and a workshops and reworked SGTAs. The workshops will enable more frequent contact with the PACE industry partners. We extended the time to complete employability modules from one week to two, with dedicated discussions added in fortnightly workshops, resulting in removal of work ready employabilty tasks from SGTAs into workshops to enable more time for PACE projects. SGTAs are also now Face to Face to ensure effective group work and completion of PACE activities for industry partners.
