This advanced-level unit of Chinese language and culture is designed for students who would like to further improve their Chinese' language and cultural competence. Students will develop their Chinese language ability, both oral and written, and will enhance their cultural and intercultural understanding through acquiring knowledge of some various aspects of Chinese culture and society.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at more advanced level.
  • ULO4: Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.

Participation

This task assesses student active engagement in the learning process, including preparation, revision, completion of assigned homework, and learning activity discussion. It is conducted online.

Written Assignments

Assessment Type 1: LOTE written composition
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Week 7 Friday 08/09, by 5:00pm
Weighting: 20%

 

This task assesses the written language proficiency of the students.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at more advanced level.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English.

Orals

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 5 hours
Due: Week 10 Tuesday (15:00-17:00) and Thursday (10:00am-12:00pm)
Weighting: 20%

 

Tasks assessing the oral communication proficiency of the students.

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Week 13 Thursday 02/11, at 10:00am
Weighting: 40%

 

This task assesses the mastery of the content learned.

The required textbook is Integrated Chinese, Vol. 3. (textbook and workbook) https://www.cheng-tsui.com/browse/integrated-chinese-4th-edition 

For Chinese Studies 6, CHIN2220/3020, we will start from the second part of the textbook.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required.
