Unit description Unit description

Creative writing involves expression and skills. It also involves reading. This practical unit introduces students to different approaches and ways of thinking about creative writing. Students engage in a series of lectures and workshops, learning a range of creative writing skills and topics. Students are encouraged to be experimental and adventurous in their writing. Seminars address different creative writing topics and readings so that students can learn about various genres, methods and approaches. The workshops are interactive; they aim to increase understanding of the process of creative writing. The aim of this unit is for students to learn, achieve and realise their creativity and writing skills in their creative work, engaging with lecture and reading content and participating in writing workshops, on-course writing exercises, and doing set assignments.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Achieve creative writing and reading skills in relation to concepts, topics, craft, technique and voice
  • ULO2: Evaluate creative writing processes
  • ULO3: Identify, engage with and apply concepts of narrative form and poetry.
  • ULO4: Analyse and discuss the work of others in group discussions.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty 

 

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of‚ 0 (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. 

 

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

Preparation for weekly class participation

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 35 hours
Due: Ongoing, Weeks 1-12
Weighting: 25%

 

Preparatory reading of set texts and completion of writing exercises, for discussion. Answering questions in weekly tutorials (or other online activities) and contributing meaningfully to class discussion. Providing critical feedback on other students’ creative works.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Achieve creative writing and reading skills in relation to concepts, topics, craft, technique and voice
  • Evaluate creative writing processes
  • Identify, engage with and apply concepts of narrative form and poetry.
  • Analyse and discuss the work of others in group discussions.

Creative Work (Minor)

Assessment Type 1: Creative work
Indicative Time on Task 2: 24 hours
Due: Week 7, Sunday 23:55pm 09/04/2023
Weighting: 25%

 

Creative writing: narrative prose or poetry. Scaffolded task.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Achieve creative writing and reading skills in relation to concepts, topics, craft, technique and voice
  • Evaluate creative writing processes
  • Identify, engage with and apply concepts of narrative form and poetry.

Creative Work (Major) with Reflective Essay

Assessment Type 1: Creative work
Indicative Time on Task 2: 35 hours
Due: Week 12, Sunday 28/05/2023
Weighting: 50%

 

Creative writing of narrative prose or poetry, plus a short reflective essay

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Achieve creative writing and reading skills in relation to concepts, topics, craft, technique and voice
  • Evaluate creative writing processes
  • Identify, engage with and apply concepts of narrative form and poetry.
  • Analyse and discuss the work of others in group discussions.

Delivery and Resources

Lectures and tutorials start in Week 1. 

Students are expected to attend or to listen to all lectures Uploaded to ECHO360), before attending their classes each week.

On campus students: Please check the university timetable for lecture and class venues.

Internal Students Enrolled in Zoom classes: Please access the class via link provided on iLearn sits. 

OUA or External Students: Please be prepared to participate in the weekly tutorials via the iLearn Discussion Forums beginning in week 1.

 

Readings

Required weekly readings for this unit will be accessed via the Leganto link in the unit iLearn website.

Only after your first login through iLearn will you be subsequently able to access the Leganto list. The list is always available via the iLearn Leganto link.

Unit Webpage and Technology required

Online units can are accessed at: http://ilearn.mq.edu.au/. 

PC and Internet access are required, Broadband or WiFi connection is essential. Basic computer skills and skills in word processing are also a requirement. Webcam or internal camera for Zoom classes if needed. 

Students must  be able to upload, download, and print Word documents. Word documents are the only format accepted for Turnitin assignments.

Results published on platform other than eStudent, (eg. iLearn, Coursera etc.) or released directly by your Unit Convenor, are not confirmed as they are subject to final approval by the University.
