In the transition from print-based media to digital writing forms what new genres, styles, techniques, platforms and audiences emerge? This applied writing unit reflects on the dynamic relationships that exist between creative writing practice and digital cultures. Recent technological innovations not only challenge established publishing modes, but also shape 'voice' in the digital sphere. We look at voice, and the increasing breakdown of boundaries between content producer and content consumer. Students will have the opportunity to engage with web-based and other electronic media, and to develop skills that advance their digital literacy. Having collectively established a theme for the unit, an e-portfolio of individual works will be produced over the course of the session. Assessment entails both class participation and written submissions.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Plan and produce short-form digital text-based creative works in two or more technologies.
  • ULO2: Employ industry-appropriate vocabulary and concepts in the analysis of digital creative writing and digital cultures.
  • ULO3: Appraise and evaluate the digital creative work of others in writing workshops

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

Digital creative work (minor)

Students will utilise two or more technologies in the writing and production of a minor digital creative work, and have published these works to the web.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Plan and produce short-form digital text-based creative works in two or more technologies.
  • Employ industry-appropriate vocabulary and concepts in the analysis of digital creative writing and digital cultures.

Digital creative work (major)

Assessment Type 1: Creative work
Indicative Time on Task 2: 56 hours
Due: 23:55 on 05/11/2023
Weighting: 40%

 

Students will utilise two or more technologies in the writing and production of a major digital creative work, and have published these works to the web.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Plan and produce short-form digital text-based creative works in two or more technologies.
  • Employ industry-appropriate vocabulary and concepts in the analysis of digital creative writing and digital cultures.

For this unit, classes will begin in week 1.

The required readings can be downloaded or read online via Leganto. In this unit many of the works you read will be accessed online, and sourced either through Leganto (Required) or sourced through your own research and shared with others in the class.
