Unit description Unit description

This introductory German unit is intended for students with little or no previous knowledge of German. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking. The book used in this unit follows a communicative approach, with additional material offered online. The unit includes material on general cultural aspects of life in Germany. It corresponds to the first level (A1) on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the German language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of German-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of German at elementary level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both German and English.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of‚ 0 (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

On-campus and external students demonstrate active engagement with the weekly content through participating in the designated activities online and, where applicable, in class.

Students complete various short tests of mixed question types. These tests are scheduled during class time.

  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both German and English.

Students engage with a variety of low-stakes writing tasks in the target language.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the German language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of German-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of German at elementary level.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both German and English.

Oral test

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 0 hours
Due: Week 13 - Wednesday 31/05/2023, during usual class time!
Weighting: 10%

 

Students are assessed in pairs and engage in a conversation in the target language. This assessment is scheduled during class time for on-campus students and via online video-conferencing applications for external students.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of German-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both German and English.

Final Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test

Due: Week 13 - Friday, 02/06/2023, 11:55PM
Weighting: 30%

 

Students complete a timed online test of mixed type questions, including one essay style question.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the German language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of German at elementary level.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of some language and language use in both German and English.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating systems are Windows 10 or 11.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.
