Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to enable students with an existing elementary command of Spanish to become independent users of the Spanish language. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in Spanish and further develops students' knowledge of contemporary Spanish and Latin American culture. This unit follows a communicative approach and is designed to further develop skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking, and requires continuous revision and engaged study from students. The unit aims to develop students' language skills to B1+ level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Spanish language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Spanish at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Spanish and in English.

General Assessment Information

Late assessment submission penalty:

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments) will be addressed by the unit convenor in response to a Special consideration application.

Please note: attendance is not assessable and no Special Consideration application is required for missing classes. You only need to lodge a request for any impacted assessment, e.g. unable to complete mini-test ("Quizzes" task), unable to submit online VoiceThread that week ("Participatory Tasks" task - in lieu of in-class topic response).

Oral Test

Semi-prepared semi-improvised group oral test. Online students will be doing this via a Zoom session.
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Spanish language.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Learning Log and Active Participation

Learning log, reflective writing journal and active participation and preparation for unit.
On successful completion you will be able to:

Regular time-limited quizzes and final end of session test including grammar, reading/listening comprehension, written composition.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Spanish at intermediate level.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Spanish and in English.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Smartphone devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. 

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions that may be required. If applicable, students are required to access the relevant online language package prior to Week 2. Students should also familiarize themselves with the Spanish keyboard switching instructions and layout for their device.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

The unit aims at fostering language skills to level B1, described as follows in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
