This advanced-level unit of Chinese language and culture is designed for students who would like to improve their Chinese language and cultural competence. Students will develop their Chinese language ability, both oral and written, and will enhance their cultural and intercultural understanding through acquiring knowledge of various aspects of Chinese culture and society.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate nuanced aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English.

General Assessment Information

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.

Participation

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task

This task assesses student active engagement in the learning process, including revision, completion of assigned homework, and student discussions.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.

Oral

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Week 8 class time, Tuesday 9 April and Thursday 11th April
Weighting: 20%

 

This task assesses students' oral language proficiency. It may take the form of a role play or individual interview.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English.

Written Assignments

Assessment Type 1: LOTE written composition
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Week 9 by 11:55pm, Friday 3rd May
Weighting: 20%

 

This task assesses the writing skills of the students, and includes short essay writing and passages for translation.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate nuanced aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level.

Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Week 13 class time, Thursday 30th May
Weighting: 40%

 

Testing assesses mastery of the content learned in the semester.

Delivery and Resources

The textbook we will be using is Integrated Chinese, Vol. 3. (textbook and workbook) https://www.cheng-tsui.com/browse/integrated-chinese-4th-edition

It is essential to have access to the textbook and workbook for the class. You will need to have  your own copy of the workbook as you will be working on the workbook throughout the semester.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.
