Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to enable students to become independent users of the Greek language. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in Greek at an advanced level and provides students with an opportunity to study Greek culture extensively. The unit aims to bring students' language skills to B2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Greek language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate nuanced aspects of Greek- speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Greek at advanced level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Greek and English.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.

Students will demonstrate their knowledge of material covered in the unit through two online quizzes. Further information pertaining to the task can be found on the iLearn site for the unit.

Written Assignment

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: 23:55 on 19/05/24
Weighting: 20%

 

The students will critically evaluate their engagement with a specific topic.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify, describe and evaluate nuanced aspects of Greek- speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Greek at advanced level.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Job interview

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 1 hours
Due: 13:00–15:00 on 24/05/24
Weighting: 30%

 

Students will undertake a simulated job interview.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Greek language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate nuanced aspects of Greek- speaking cultures and societies.
  • Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

Final Online Test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: 23:55 on 02/06/24
Weighting: 20%

Both of the weekly lessons will be recorded. Weekly recordings will be uploaded within 48 hours and could be accessed in Echo360.

Online Unit

All unit information, weekly recordings, homework, assessment tasks, additional vocabulary, grammar exercises, texts, materials and potential changes to the due dates or classes will be regularly announced and updated on the unit’s iLearn.  It is essential to you familiarise yourself with access to iLearn as you will on a weekly basis find the homework and the tasks. It is recommended that you visit the page at least twice a week.

Technology

Students are required to have access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

Unit Schedule

In the weekly practical students will be introduced to new grammar patterns and vocabulary of Modern Greek language and practice their speaking, listening, reading and writing.

In the weekly tutorial students will be engaged in Modern Greek texts/ articles with everyday topics and aspects of Greek culture such as Greek traditions, literature, environment/ ecology, entertainment/ leisure time, music, work.

All tutorials start from Week 1, 14 - 25 February 2024.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

This unit provides advanced learners with the opportunity to work towards language skills at level B2, the fourth level on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Through engagement with the Greek language in a range of contexts, the unit invites you to develop the ability to

  • understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization.
  • interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
