Unit description
This unit teaches the theory and production of websites in the context of the digital age and what that means for media audiences and users. Students develop high level production skills and learn to apply theories of audiences, information architecture, usability and user-focused design to their own original projects created using HTML, CSS and jQuery. |

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: apply a critical knowledge of the practices, theories and technologies of contemporary Web design.
- ULO2: combine HTML, CSS and Javascript in the production of interactive Web-based media.
- ULO3: solve coding and design challenges.
- ULO4: work independently and professionally in response to project demands.
- ULO5: communicate and present information in modes suited to a range of audiences.
General Assessment Information
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of‚ 0 (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.
This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.
These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due date.

Website Review
Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 18 hours
Due: 2024-09-06
Weighting: 20%
You are required to create a media presentation critiquing a website. You should analyse the site’s design, appeal, interface, interactivity and usability, and analyse the positive or negative effects on the target audience(s). This assignment requires you to draw on knowledge gained from the course materials. You will refer to the set readings and your own independent research in executing a critique set against a background of well-researched and informed assessment criteria. On successful completion you will be able to:

- communicate and present information in modes suited to a range of audiences.
Project
Assessment Type 1: Project
Indicative Time on Task 2: 45 hours
Due: 2024-11-01
Weighting: 50%
You will design and build a website. You will research and develop appropriate multimodal content for the website. Your website will communicate a message, call to action, or narrative to its audience using a combination of text, image, and audio-visual content enhanced by interactive possibilities. Refer to iLearn for further information.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- apply a critical knowledge of the practices, theories and technologies of contemporary Web design.
- combine HTML, CSS and Javascript in the production of interactive Web-based media.
- solve coding and design challenges.
- work independently and professionally in response to project demands.
- communicate and present information in modes suited to a range of audiences.
Coding Tests
Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 27 hours
Due: 21:00 27/08/2024; and 21:00 10/09/2024
Weighting: 30%
You will be required to complete coding tests during the semester to assess your understanding and application of specific concepts taught in the unit. Refer to iLearn for further information.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- combine HTML, CSS and Javascript in the production of interactive Web-based media.
- solve coding and design challenges.

Each week there is a pre-recorded video lecture and a one-hour workshop.
