Unit description Unit description

In this unit you will further develop your manual technique skill development and be introduced to a broader range of techniques commonly used in the management of patients who attend a chiropractic clinic. You will further develop competency in the assessment and management of a wide range of sports injuries in the chiropractic setting in Australia. An evidenced based, multidisciplinary team-based approach will be emphasized in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Formulate evidence-based care and management options for patients presenting with musculoskeletal conditions.
  • ULO2: Identify instances where co-management with another health professional, or referral are required for patients presenting with musculoskeletal conditions.
  • ULO3: Communicate and justify proposed care and management options to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • ULO4: Assess complex patient presentations, and where appropriate, plan and deliver manual techniques at the standard of a graduate-level chiropractor.
  • ULO5: Adapt interventions for patients with musculoskeletal conditions accounting for patient-specific factors and patient preferences, and monitor the outcomes of these interventions.

General Assessment Information

Grade descriptors and other information concerning grading are contained in the Macquarie University Assessment Policy.

All final grades are determined by a grading committee, in accordance with the Macquarie University Assessment Policy, and are not the sole responsibility of the Unit Convenor.

Students will be awarded a final grade and a mark which must correspond to the grade descriptors specified in the Assessment Procedure (clause 127-8).

To pass this unit, you must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes, meet any ungraded requirements, and achieve a final mark of 50 or better.

Late Submissions

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (OF THE TOTAL POSSIBLE MARK) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern.

Advanced Manual Technique I - VIVA

Assessment Type 1: Viva/oral examination
Indicative Time on Task 2: 33 hours

This is a hurdle assessment task (see assessment policy for more information on hurdle assessment tasks)

 

This assessment will develop your ability to formulate a care and management plan for case scenarios involving musculoskeletal conditions. You will demonstrate your ability to communicate your care and management plan to a specialist audience. You will demonstrate your ability to deliver and adapt a selection of manual techniques that would be suitable for each of the clinical case scenarios provided.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Formulate evidence-based care and management options for patients presenting with musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Identify instances where co-management with another health professional, or referral are required for patients presenting with musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Communicate and justify proposed care and management options to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Assess complex patient presentations, and where appropriate, plan and deliver manual techniques at the standard of a graduate-level chiropractor.

Advanced Manual Technique II - Preliminary Skills Spot Test

You will demonstrate your ability to apply your understanding of the theory and adapt your psychomotor skills associated with advanced manual technique to basic clinical scenarios.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Communicate and justify proposed care and management options to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Assess complex patient presentations, and where appropriate, plan and deliver manual techniques at the standard of a graduate-level chiropractor.
  • Adapt interventions for patients with musculoskeletal conditions accounting for patient-specific factors and patient preferences, and monitor the outcomes of these interventions.

Advanced Manual Technique II - OSCE

You will demonstrate your ability to apply your understanding of the theory, equipment and adapt your psychomotor skills associated with advanced manual technique to complex clinical scenarios.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Communicate and justify proposed care and management options to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Assess complex patient presentations, and where appropriate, plan and deliver manual techniques at the standard of a graduate-level chiropractor.
  • Adapt interventions for patients with musculoskeletal conditions accounting for patient-specific factors and patient preferences, and monitor the outcomes of these interventions.

Clinical Case Study

Written case report designed to help you understand and contextualise the role of manual techniques in primary care settings. You will demonstrate your ability to communicate your care and management plan to a specialist and non-specialist audience.

  • Identify instances where co-management with another health professional, or referral are required for patients presenting with musculoskeletal conditions.

Changes from Previous Offering

One assessment (final theory examination) has been removed from the 2024 offereing of this unit. The unit learning outcomes that were previously assessed in this theory examination will now be assessed in the Advanced Manual Technique I - VIVA. The weighting of the various assessments has been modified to refect the removal of the final theory examination.

SECTION 7: PROFESSIONALISM

In the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences, professionalism is a key capability embedded in all our courses.

As part of developing professionalism, students are expected to attend all small group interactive sessions including clinical, practical, laboratory, work-integrated learning (e.g., PACE placements), and team-based learning activities. Some learning activities are recorded (e.g., face-to-face lectures), however you are encouraged to avoid relying upon such material as they do not recreate the whole learning experience and technical issues can and do occur.
