Unit description Unit description
This unit is suitable for intermediate students who have previously studied Croatian for at least 400 hours or with equivalent knowledge. This unit aims to enable students to become independent users of the Croatian language. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in Croatian and further develops students' knowledge of contemporary Croatian culture. The unit aims to develop students' language skills towards B1+ level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Croatian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Croatian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Croatian at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.

This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time-sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.

To be very clear:

  • Unless you have applied for special consideration and had your application approved, for each day your assignment is late, 5 marks will be deducted. For example, if you submit your assignment 7 days late, 35 marks will be deducted.
  • If your assignment is more than 7 days late (including weekends), you will get 0 marks for your assignment.

These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due date.

This assessment task will be delivered in separate online quizzes. Quizzes consist of both closed (e.g. multiple-choice, matching) and open type questions (e.g filling the gaps, short answer) and are based on the unit content.

  • Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

This assessment will be delivered in separate assignments. Students will need to answer a set of questions based on the unit content.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Croatian at intermediate level.
  • Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

Oral Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Simulation/role play
Indicative Time on Task 2: 3 hours
Due: 18:00 22/10/2024, 16.00 24/10/2024
Weighting: 20%

 

Oral Presentation is to be delivered at the end of each session. It can be done in person. Students are required to prepare a speech on a familiar topic in advance. In the second part of the presentation, students will need to answer several simple questions.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Croatian language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Croatian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Croatian and in English.

Final test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 2 hours
Due: 16.00 31/10/2024
Weighting: 30%

 

It assesses the content of the whole unit and consists of both closed (e.g. multiple-choice, matching) and open type questions (e.g. filling the gaps, short answer). It also includes reading comprehension and writing section.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Croatian language.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Croatian at intermediate level.
  • Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.

Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

This unit provides advanced learners with the opportunity to work towards language skills at level A2+/B1, the third level on the six-level scale of competence laid down in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Through engagement with the Croatian language in a range of contexts, the unit invites you to

  • develop the ability to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken
  • produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest
  • describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
