Unit description Unit description

This unit is offered on a pass/fail basis. This unit covers the initial preparatory components for conducting an empirical project as well as a literature review paper with clinical psychology relevance. This unit is the compulsory pre-requisite for Unit Codes: PSYC8991 and PSYC8992 (Research Dissertation Units - Parts 1 and 2). Content in this unit will cover efficient methods for reviewing relevant literature. Students will also be required to present their research design formulation in an interactive format and work on fine-tuning it in preparation for ethics submission. Students will be required to work with a member of staff who will be their assigned research supervisor for this unit and the subsequent dissertation units, PSYC8991 and PSYC8992.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Conduct a critical evaluation of theories and empirical studies for a particular population/ topic relevant to clinical psychology which will inform the literature review paper and empirical paper.
  • ULO2: Produce the first complete draft of the literature review paper to be presented in journal format.
  • ULO3: Design an empirical project with consultation from assigned research supervisor and which will form the basis of the empirical paper.
  • ULO4: Demonstrate an awareness of the ethical considerations and processes necessary for appropriate conduct of research.

General Assessment Information

General assessment Information Grade descriptors and other information concerning grading are contained in the Macquarie University Assessment Policy. All final grades are determined by a grading committee, in accordance with the Macquarie University Assessment Policy, and are not the sole responsibility of the Unit Convenor.

Students will be awarded a final grade and a mark which must correspond to the grade descriptors specified in the Assessment Procedure (clause 128). To pass this unit, you must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes, meet any ungraded requirements, and achieve a final pass grade. Further details for each assessment task will be available on iLearn.

Late Submissions: Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, if submission occurs after the 7th day following the due date, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern. For any late submissions of time sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, students need to submit an application for Special Consideration.

Illness or Significant Disruption to Assessments: In the event of illness or significant disruptions during an examination or timed assessment, students must promptly cease their work. If the incident occurs in a classroom setting, they must inform the convenor/supervisor/invigilator immediately. If the disruption takes place outside the classroom, it should be reported immediately to the appropriate course authority. Subsequently, students are required to submit an application for special consideration. Students who have already submitted an assessment or participated in an examination or timed assessment without reporting any issues during the assessment process will only be considered for a second opportunity to undertake that assessment only under exceptional circumstances. The decision to grant a second opportunity will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, with careful consideration given to the nature and validity of the exceptional circumstances that significantly affected their performance in the initial assessment. A statement of fact cannot suffice as evidence in such cases.

The student must submit a draft of a literature review (approximately 5000 words) that will form the basis of the final literature review paper submitted in PSYC8991.

The student is expected to receive input from their research supervisor in developing a suitable, feasible research project. This project proposal will include either preparing a new ethics application, or reviewing the pre-existing ethics application in line with the student's project.

Delivery and Resources

For this unit there are 2 x 2 hour seminars scheduled in Weeks 2 and 3 of Session 2 (see University Timetable), and a workshop scheduled on Friday 13th September 2024.

During the initial Week 2 seminar, the Unit Convenor will discuss the requirements for this unit. Students are also expected to have regular supervision sessions with their research supervisor throughout Session 2. The Unit Convenor for this unit will also be correponding with students via iLearn to provide relevant information regarding the requirements of this unit.

Technology Used: Active participation in the learning activities throughout the unit will require students to have access to a tablet, laptop or similar device. Students who do not own their own laptop computer may borrow one from the university library.
