Unit description
This unit aims to help students develop their knowledge of Ancient Greek language. It is designed for students who have already studied one semester of Ancient Greek. The unit completes the systematic introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of Ancient Greek. The unit aims to help students build skills in reading original Ancient Greek literary and documentary texts, such as inscriptions, and understand the significance of Ancient Greek in the study of relevant ancient cultures. |

This year we will pilot a modification of 'Translation Exercises,' because accurate translation from and into ancient Greek is now easy to obtain via ChatGPT. Further details in class and in iLearn.
Late Assessment Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

An exercise in which students show familiarity with online helps for Greek language study, including Microsoft Word, Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, Perseus Project, and others.

Short weekly exercises to practise vocabulary, grammar and syntax knowledge and the application of that knowledge. The exercises come directly from the unit textbook or are modified versions of exercises from the textbook. There is a separate schedule of the exercises for assessment on the unit's website. Some require translation from Ancient Greek, some into Ancient Greek. You do not need to submit all the exercises in the textbook--just answer the questions listed in the assessment schedule.

This will examine knowledge of grammar, syntax and vocabulary. Students will be asked to complete a variety of language-based problems including translation from Ancient Greek, translation into Ancient Greek, grammatical analysis and the critical study of the language and significance of an ancient text.

This unit introduces the student to a number of online helps to learning ancient Greek and to the study of ancient Greek texts.

Submission of the Translation Exercises, Online Sites and Facilities Survey, and Texts Exercise is electronic via Turnitin. Extensions are available on medical grounds and may be requested under other special circumstances. Apply via ask.mq.edu.au.
In this unit we will study C.A.E. Luschnig's Introduction to Ancient Greek [second edition] from p.135 to the end of the book.
