Unit description Unit description

How are cultural identities created, represented and negotiated within and across cultures via different visual media? This unit provides an overview of a range of visual media, such as film, theatre, performing arts, features in Sydney’s urban environment, visual arts, followed by a deep engagement with specific case studies. Through working with selected examples in different languages and cultures, students will explore key elements of specific media, strategies of visualisation as well as questions of the gaze and modes of viewing, both in culturally specific and intercultural contexts, asking how cultural knowledge is transmitted visually across and within cultures. Lectures will be delivered in English. Tutorials will provide the opportunity to engage with case studies using languages taught at Macquarie University.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Demonstrate sophisticated skills in the language(s) studied at Macquarie University by evaluating and discussing written and spoken information in authentic sources
  • ULO2: Identify, describe, evaluate and creatively communicate ways in which society and culture interact and locally manifest in visual forms.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of theoretical and linguistic interpretations of intercultural visual texts mobilising language(s) other than English
  • ULO4: Identify, describe and evaluate how visual texts evolve across languages and cultures.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special Consideration application.

Students create a list of items of vocabulary useful for discussing a particular medium in the language that they are studying. A tool will be made available in iLearn to support the engagement with the items by the entire cohort.

Peer discussion

Presentations

Students deliver a presentation focusing on an effective communication skills, and provide feedback to the presentations of their peers.
