Unit description Unit description
This unit is designed to develop skills in all areas of Japanese language (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to an advanced level of proficiency. Students learn to discuss a wider range of topics as well as substantially increase their knowledge of vocabulary and kanji. This unit continues to focus on further increasing students' skills in intercultural communication so that they will be able to communicate in a manner which is culturally as well as linguistically appropriate. Students will be encouraged to sit for level N2 or N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). Interactive class activities and the use of online resources provide students with opportunities to use Japanese as much as possible.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Japanese at advanced level.
  • ULO4: Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.

A comprehensive test of reading, writing and listening skills, covering the content of Weeks 1-12.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Japanese at advanced level.

Oral Task 2

Assessment Type 1: Performance

Weighting: 10%

 

A creative skit performance in Japanese, either in a pair or group of three. The skit should be set in a workplace situation and appropriate speech styles used accordingly. Students will submit online.

The online unit (iLearn) can be accessed at: https://ilearn.mq.edu.au. Students must have regular, reliable access to a computer and the internet to complete this unit. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient. Completion of assessment tasks will also require a computer with Japanese fonts enabled. Basic computer skills (e.g., internet browsing) and skills in word processing in Japanese and English are required.
