Unit description Unit description

This unit explores the opportunities and challenges for interactive storytelling. As well as engaging with theories of interactivity, narrative and design, students will expand their existing knowledge of HTML and CSS and learn JavaScript and jQuery to produce a major interactive project.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: demonstrate and analyse key concepts in non-linear and interactive digital storytelling.
  • ULO2: design and produce an original creative work in the online medium.
  • ULO3: apply high-level HTML and CSS skills and jQuery skills.
  • ULO4: apply problem solving skills in the production of a major project.
  • ULO5: work independently and professionally in response to project demands.

General Assessment Information

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.

Project Proposal

Progress Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 4.5 hours
Due: Week 10 in timetabled classes
Weighting: 5%

 

You are required to present to staff the progress you have made on your major project. Refer to iLearn for further information.

Beta Test Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task

Due: Week 12 in timetabled classes
Weighting: 10%

 

You are required to present to staff the substantial progress you have made on your major project as it nears completion. Refer to iLearn for further information.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:

  • work independently and professionally in response to project demands.

Major Project

Assessment Type 1: Project
Indicative Time on Task 2: 50 hours
Due: 23:55 31/05/2024
Weighting: 60%

 

You are required to design and produce an original Web-based interactive story. Refer to iLearn for further information.

 
On successful completion you will be able to:

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due date.
