Unit description
This is the third of three units which comprise a total of 12 weeks of core clinical placements where you will be embedded in healthcare teams working with individuals with a variety of health conditions in Stage 2 of the Macquarie MD. Across the three core clinical placement units (MEDI8311,MEDI8312 , MEDI8313) you will complete placements aligned with clinical disciplines involved in health care delivery (Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Primary/Community Care) in public and private health care sectors and in global and/or local settings. This unit provides you with the opportunity to participate in the delivery of patient-centred healthcare and to apply your medical science knowledge and pathophysiological understanding, history taking and physical examination skills which you have acquired across Stage 1, and to integrate and apply your clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills; and formulate a management plan in diverse clinical settings. You will be required to participate in healthcare delivery and demonstrate significant progress toward the development of the 4 Macquarie MD Graduate Capabilities: Scientist and Scholar, Clinical Practitioner, Engaged Global Citizen and Professional, and the Graduate Entrustable Professional Activities, at a standard appropriate to Stage 2. |

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: Applies knowledge of relevant medical sciences, health conditions, scientific principles and mechanisms of disease to explain clinical presentations, as well as how drugs and other treatments are used to manage or prevent disease in individuals seeking healthcare in the clinical disciplines relevant to placement rotations (Capability 1: Scientist and Scholar).
- ULO2: Formulates focused clinical questions, uses effective information search strategies, critically evaluates the quality of the evidence and develops evidence-based and/or research-informed judgements on clinical presentations and medical-issues in the clinical disciplines relevant to the placement rotations (Capability 1: Scientist and Scholar).
- ULO3: Elicits a concise and accurate medical history and conducts a physical and/or mental examination with patients seeking healthcare in the clinical disciplines relevant to the placement rotations (Capability 2: Clinical Practitioner).
- ULO4: Builds rapport and communicates sensitively in clinical settings with patients, their families and/or carers, and actively encourages patients to contribute to the discussion and choice of diagnostic, therapeutic and management approaches including health promotion strategies (Capability 2: Clinical Practitioner).
- ULO5: Uses research-informed clinical reasoning to derive differential diagnoses, investigations and basic management plans for people seeking healthcare in the clinical disciplines relevant to the placement rotations (Capability 2: Clinical Practitioner).
- ULO6: Communicates history and physical examination findings, differential diagnoses and management plans concisely and accurately in verbal or written form to interprofessional healthcare teams and/or peers (Capability 2: Clinical Practitioner).
- ULO7: Performs procedural skills competently and safely in a clinical environment (Capability 2: Clinical Practitioner).
- ULO8: Practices effectively and with cultural responsiveness and sensitivity in Australian and/or Indian clinical settings, engaging positively and effectively with patients, families and/or carers, medical and healthcare professionals and others from diverse cultural backgrounds (Capability 3: Engaged Global Citizen).
- ULO9: Identifies and discusses social, cultural and economic factors, as well as healthcare team and health system factors, which may impact on healthcare and population health in the clinical disciplines relevant to the placement rotations (Capability 3: Engaged Global Citizen).
- ULO10: Demonstrates effective teamwork and professional behaviour in accordance with ethical, legal and professional standards of medical care when interacting with patients and their families and/or carers, the healthcare teams, peers and the host organization (Capability 4: Professional).
- ULO11: Uses feedback from teachers, clinicians, peers and patients to inform self-evaluation and critical reflection, and generates development plans to address learning needs (Capability 4: Professional).

2 projects will be required in the unit. The topic of the projects will be dependent on your placement rotations. Please refer to your assessment guide available on iLearn for details. Assessment criteria will be mapped to relevant Capability Aspects (CAs) and Graduate Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). Overall, CA performance and EPAs will be recorded in your Macquarie Assessment Portfolio.

In-Training Assessments (ITA) at end of rotations by clinical supervisors. These may vary between clinical disciplines and may include evaluation of self-assessments, logbook and learning plans. Delivery and Resources
Throughout Year 3 the majority of your learning will be via immersion in the clinical environment. This can be at any of our teaching hospitals or a number of private health clinics across Sydney and internationally.
Clinical learning will be supplemented by a structured academic program. This will include face to face tutorials and seminars, online lectures, simulation tutorials amongst other methods. There will be an expectation that your learning will be self directed, and you are encouraged to develop skills in navigating a variety of clinical resources such as eTG and UpToDate which will be available to you via the University Library.
A comprehensive curriculum in each of the core disciplines (Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics) as well as the broader graduate capabilities including patient safety and quality and ethics, is presented on iLearn, where a number of additional resources are available to you.
