Unit description Unit description

This unit is offered on a pass/fail basis. It is designed for students interested in Languages and Cultures who wish to study at a partner university. A program of study at the overseas university must be worked out in advance in consultation with the unit convenor. Students will need to complete additional assessment at Macquarie University on their return from overseas. Students planning to take this option should discuss their plans as early as possible with the unit's staff contact.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: express nuanced understandings of how language and culture interact, and evidence ability to apply language to solving real-word tasks.
  • ULO2: show awareness of differences and similarities between language use in their native language or culture and the target language or culture, as well as thoughtful understandings of how to negotiate difficulties that arise during cross-cultural and/or cross-linguistic interactions
  • ULO3: increase their ability to clearly express, detail, defend, and/or promote ideas in public situations, through their native language and/or target language
  • ULO4: skilfully interact and/or work with others to accomplish complex tasks, identify the dynamics present within diverse groups and use intercultural knowledge to strategically engage with other actors to enhance communities.

General Assessment Information

Late penalties do not apply for in-country placements extending beyond Summer Vacation session dates. In all other cases, the critical reflection must be submitted by the deadline or late penalties will apply. If you anticipate unavoidable difficulty in completing the assessment task, contact the convener as soon as possible.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day an assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of 0 (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due dates.

Special Consideration

If a student is prevented by serious and unavoidable disruption from completing unit requirements in accordance with their ability, they may apply for support under the Special Consideration Policy. The use of generative AI

The use of generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT and Grammarly PRO) is strictly limited to proofreading and spell check and NOT be used to produce substantial portions of text for your assessent, including but not limited to rewriting your work, adjusting expressions and translation of your work.

Critical Reflection

Assessment Type 1: Media presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours

Students will produce a video wherein they discuss and reflect upon their experiences during the placement. The video should touch on an issue relating to what the student has learned, how they overcame challenges, how the experience related to their overall program of study, and the ways in which they will employ what they learned in the future study and/or community engagement. Additionally, students should discuss their preparation for the experience, and how this impacted their time at the host institution. The backup supplementary task for this assessment task is a travel diary discussing the experience.

Intensive Immersive Course

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 70 hours
Due: Subject to individual programs
Weighting: 60%

 

Students are required to satisfactorily complete the components of their approved program of study. The backup supplementary task for this assessment task must be an equivalent program or experience, arranged by the student with the host institution.
