Unit description
This unit is for anyone interested in human physiology, and how humans maintain homeostasis whilst interacting with the outside world. The human body is capable of surviving in a dazzling variety of changing environmental conditions. It can live in jungles, mountains, crowded cities, or deserts. It can withstand the heat of a summer in Far North Queensland or the cold of a Tasmanian winter. In this unit, you will learn how systems physiology allows the human body to achieve homeostasis (a normal internal environment) in a constantly changing world. We will investigate the physiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, immune, gastrointestinal, muscular, skeletal, nervous, reproductive and renal systems. Practical classes involve measuring physiological parameters such as blood pressure and electrical conduction through the heart in humans as well as exploring how digestive enzymes work. The unit content is designed that students with a background in human biology will not be disadvantaged, however students with a background in anatomy, medical chemistry and biomolecular science are encouraged to enroll. Late Assessment Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark of the task) will be applied for each day a written report or presentation assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. The submission time for all uploaded assessments is 11:55 pm. A 1-hour grace period will be provided to students who experience a technical concern. For any late submission of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, please apply for Special Consideration.

The laboratory content will be assessed by presentation of a completed lab book with oral discussion of the experiments.

Students will be given a problem set to attempt at home. Students are encouraged to complete the problem set under closed book conditions, and then correct their mistakes under open book conditions.

Week 1 Classes
Will be online only. Pre-recorded lectures will be posted during the week. You will need these for the classes in week 2.

To enable students more time to focus on learning, understanding and reflecting on the content of our unit we have revised the assessment structure as follows. There are now only three assessments: a problem set assessment, a lab book portfolio and a final exam. Although no marks are associated with attendance, all activities provide you with key content designed to help you understand content and complete the assessments.
