This unit aims to help history students consolidate advanced skills in ancient languages, especially through the reading of original texts at D Level in Latin.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Recognise Latin vocabulary from different periods and genres
  • ULO2: Demonstrate understanding of the grammar required for the translation of Latin texts appropriate to level of study
  • ULO3: Explore and appraise relevant translations including AI-generated, online grammatical and lexical reference tools

Short language task

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task Indicative Time on Task 2: 16 hours Due 23:59 on: 17 Aug, 14 Sept, 20 Oct Weighting: 15%

Three formative participation exercises

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Identify and recall Latin grammatical structures at more advanced level
  • Recognise and memorise extended Latin vocabulary
  • Assess the grammar required for the translation of Latin texts appropriate to level of study
  • Explore and appraise relevant grammatical and lexical reference tools
  • Employ linguistic technical terms
  • Integrate knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in reading and writing Latin texts
  • Analyse the significance of Latin for the study of relevant ancient culture

Language task (long)

Assessment Type 1: Problem set Indicative Time on Task 2: 16 hours Due 23:59: 7 Sept, 2 Nov  Weighting: 50%

Two exercises in translation from Latin to English. The texts will be those covered in class lectures.

Take-home test

A non-invigilated [take-home] major task focussed on language analysis

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test Indicative Time on Task 2: 24 hours Due: 9 Nov, at 23:59. Weighting: 35%

The test will be timed at 2 hours from starting it during the week prior to the due date. Access will open on 3 November 2025 at 9am.

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Identify and recall Latin grammatical structures at more advanced level
  • Recognise and memorise extended Latin vocabulary
  • Assess the grammar required for the translation of Latin texts appropriate to level of study
  • Explore and appraise relevant grammatical and lexical reference tools
  • Employ linguistic technical terms
  • Integrate knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in reading and writing Latin text

Late penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.
