Unit description Unit description

This unit introduces the main econometric techniques used by businesses and economists in the analysis of economic relationships, marketing and finance. These tools are critical building blocks for students to make the link between data and established evidence. The unit focuses on estimation and hypothesis testing, simple and multiple regression, prediction and the interpretation and evaluation of regression models within the classical linear regression model.

Important Academic Dates

Information about important academic dates including deadlines for withdrawing from units are available at https://www.mq.edu.au/study/calendar-of-dates

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Analyse and apply key statistical concepts, including probability distributions, parameters and estimators, the sampling distribution of an estimator, point and interval estimation, and hypothesis testing.
  • ULO2:  Specify, estimate and interpret a regression model.
  • ULO3: Summarise and interpret the estimation results, and draw valid inferences utilising hypothesis tests.
  • ULO4: Critically evaluate the assumptions of a classical (or standard) regression model and the consequences of a violation of the assumptions.
  • ULO5: Employ an econometric software program to solve an econometric problem.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty (written assessments) Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55 pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern. For any late submissions of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, students need to submit an application for Special Consideration.

Assessment Tasks

Name Weighting Hurdle Due
Formal and Observed Learning: Exam 50% No University examination period
Skills Development: Econometric Problem Solving 30% No 17/10/2025
Skills Development: Knowledge Quiz 20% No 19/09/2025

Formal and Observed Learning: Exam

Assessment Type 1: Examination
Indicative Time on Task 2: 35 hours
Due: University examination period
Weighting: 50%

The purpose of this assessment is for you to demonstrate the expertise you have gained in this unit. You will participate in a 2-hour, on campus, closed-book exam held during the University Examination period. Important information about the exam will be made available on the unit iLearn page.

You should also review the MQ Exams website for general tips: https://students.mq.edu.au/study/assessment-exams/exams.

On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Analyse and apply key statistical concepts, including probability distributions, parameters and estimators, the sampling distribution of an estimator, point and interval estimation, and hypothesis testing.
  • Summarise and interpret the estimation results, and draw valid inferences utilising hypothesis tests.
  • Critically evaluate the assumptions of a classical (or standard) regression model and the consequences of a violation of the assumptions.

Skills Development: Econometric Problem Solving

Assessment Type 1: Problem set
Indicative Time on Task 2: 25 hours
Due: 17/10/2025
Weighting: 30%

The purpose of this assessment is to develop an understanding of econometric techniques and theory and how they can be applied to solve practical problems in economics. You will complete a set of questions requiring both calculation and short written answers. It will be based on material covered in the lectures prior to the submission deadline.

Skills in focus:

  • Problem solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Discipline Knowledge

Deliverable: Short answer written submission to problem set.

This is an individual assessment.

On successful completion you will be able to:
  •  Specify, estimate and interpret a regression model.
  • Summarise and interpret the estimation results, and draw valid inferences utilising hypothesis tests.
  • Employ an econometric software program to solve an econometric problem.

Skills Development: Knowledge Quiz

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: 19/09/2025
Weighting: 20%

The purpose of this quiz is to ensure your acquisition of the concepts and skills that are foundational to applied econometrics. You will be given a quiz before the mid session break and will receive feedback on your progress.

Skills in focus:

  • Discipline knowledge
  • Problem solving

Deliverable: Online quiz

This is an individual assessment.

On successful completion you will be able to:
  •  Specify, estimate and interpret a regression model.
  • Summarise and interpret the estimation results, and draw valid inferences utilising hypothesis tests.
  • Employ an econometric software program to solve an econometric problem.

1 If you need help with your assignment, please contact:

  • the academic teaching staff in your unit for guidance in understanding or completing this type of assessment
  • the Writing Centre for academic skills support.

2 Indicative time-on-task is an estimate of the time required for completion of the assessment task and is subject to individual variation

Delivery and Resources

Delivery

This unit will be delivered through

  • weekly pre-recorded lectures,
  • a weekly hour-long face-to-face lecture, and
  • a weekly tutorial

The weekly F2F lecture will be live-streamed for online students and recorded. Students are expected to attend the F2F lecture, but will be able to access the lecture recordings on ECHO360 if they are unable to attend some weeks.

The weekly tutorials (face-to-face or online) will cover practical applications of the lecture materials.

Required textbook

Wooldridge, J. M., Wadud, M., Lye, J. and Joyeux, R. (2021) Introductory Econometrics (2nd Asia-Pacific ed.)

Technology and learning materials

In this unit, we will make use of the following software:

  • Excel
  • Zoom
  • Python

Students will also need to access other course materials, including lecture notes, tutorial questions, and additional readings, via the MQ learning management system, iLearn
