This unit examines issues of design, implementation and evaluation relating to the use of technology in education. It investigates how current and emerging technologies can be used to effectively develop high school students' capabilities across a range of discipline areas. It provokes consideration of how research and theory can inform the effective design of technology-enhanced learning, and critical reflection of the role, place and influence of technology in secondary school contexts.

General Submission Information

Please format assessments using 12-point font and 1.5 spacing. All assessments must be submitted electronically. Turnitin plagiarism detection software is used to check all written assessments. It is the responsibility of all students to ensure that their submitted work is in a format compatible with Turnitin software for plagiarism checking. Submissions must meet the required file type and formatting specifications outlined in the assessment guidelines. Failure to submit work in an acceptable format may result in delays in processing your submission and potential penalties for non-compliance with assessment requirements. If you are unsure about the file format or have technical difficulties, it is your responsibility to seek assistance before the submission deadline. Students should be careful to check that they submit the correct file for an assessment as no re-submissions will be accepted after the due date and time, including instances where students upload an incorrect file. It is not the responsibility of unit staff to contact students who have failed to submit assessments. If you have any missing items of assessment, it is your responsibility to contact the unit convenor.

Students can use Turnitin’s Originality Report as a learning tool to improve their academic writing if this option is made available in the unit.

Word limits are strictly applied. Work above the word limit will not be marked.

 

Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Students should be aware of and apply the University policy on academic integrity (see: https://policies.mq.edu.au/document/view.php?id=3). Any student suspected of using unauthorised AI in an assignment will be referred to the Faculty of Arts Discipline Committee. Penalties can include reduced marks for an assessment, being awarded '0' for a task, failing an entire unit, being excluded from a course of study. Please see each assessment task description/rubric for expectations about AI.

 

Special Consideration / Late Penalties

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day an assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends) (see: https://students.mq.edu.au/study/assessment-exams/special-consideration). Applications for extensions must be made via Service Connect. After the 7th day, a mark of 0 (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11:55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessments (incl. essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc).

Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special Consideration application. A Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic. Students should not request an informal arrangement from their tutor, lecturer or Unit Convenor (or equivalent). Where an application for Special Consideration is approved and the outcome is an extension to the due date of a task, submissions that are received after the new due date will be subject to late penalties that are calculated from the new due date. This only applies where the outcome is an extension to the due date – see the Special Consideration Policy for a schedule of all possible outcomes.

 

Marking

All assessments are marked using a rubric.

Marking of all assessments is moderated by the Unit Convenor.

 

University Policy on Grading

Assignments will be awarded grades ranging from HD to F according to guidelines set out in the University's Grading System and University Assessment Policy.

To attain a pass or higher grade in Professional Experience a student must obtain a satisfactory in both the Professional Experience component and a pass or higher grade in the academic component. For Professional Experience units the Professional Experience Evaluation Report is marked as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. The Macquarie Teaching Performance Assessment (MQTPA - in final WIL/PEx units) is marked as Not met, Met or Exceeds.

 

Results

Results shown in iLearn, or released directly by your Unit Convenor, are not confirmed because they are subject to final approval by the University. Learning Technology Module

Students design a module of work in teams that demonstrates how technology can effectively enhance student learning outcomes, and include an individually written justification of the elements they designed (1000 words). This is the summative and integrative assessment task.

  • Develop technology-enhanced learning designs based on insightful selection and use of contemporary technologies.

ePortfolio (Main)

Students will set up an e-portfolio of resources and strategies to support the design of technology-enhanced learning. Students complete an ePortfolio post each week that critically reflects on the use of technology to enhance learning with reference to research literature, in accordance with the topic covered in tutorials and lectures (approx 300 words per post).

Delivery and Resources

Unit Organisation

This is a ten credit point unit run over a standard session. See the Unit Schedule below for all teaching weeks. Note that there are no lecture or tutorial classes in Week 11-13 so that second-year education students can complete their professional experience placement. If for some reason you need to undertake your professional experience placement at a different time then we recommend that you enroll in online mode through eStudent and advise the convenor and your tutor if you will need to complete some tutorial activities outside your scheduled tutorial class time.

Lecture (Online for all students) - Monday 11am - 12pm (see iLearn for Zoom link, students can only access using their MQ Zoom account). The lectures are designed to be interactive as well as informative, and to assist you to perform well in your assessment tasks. If you are unable to attend a lecture then the ECHO360 recording will be made available. Zoom and ECHO records will enable the convenor to determine which students have attended either the lecture or tutorial and those student that have not. 

Tutorials - Please check your personalised timetable in eStudent for your tutorial time and location. Students must attend the tutorials / modes for which they have enrolled. There are at least two important reasons for this. Firstly, eStudent is used to create tutorial activity groupings in iLearn, so students who attend tutorial classes other than the one in which they are enrolled may not be able to access their tutorial activities. Secondly, the Task 1 Learning Technology Module groups are selected based on tutorial classes. Any changes to tutorial enrolments must be completed officially through e-student. Please email the convenor and the respective tutor/s to advise of any class changes.

Students in face-to-face classes should bring their own laptop to class. 

Students are expected to attend and participate in all the tutorials. Activities completed during tutorials are essential for building the core knowledge and/or skills required to demonstrate the learning outcomes of this unit (as assessed through the Task 1 and Task 2 assessment tasks). Students will need to:

  • prepare for the tutorials by completing the readings and lecture prior to class
  • attend the tutorials
  • participate in tutorial discussions
  • complete the tutorial activities.

Tutors will keep a record of participation in all tutorial classes. If you miss a tutorial class you do not need to apply for special consideration, however, do contact your tutor to find out what you have missed and the work that you need to catch up.

In previous sessions students have been caught without access during peak periods such as exam times, so we recommend that you purchase either an e-Book or hardcopy version.
