Unit description Unit description

This unit is designed to develop skills in all areas of Japanese language (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to an advanced level of proficiency. Students learn to discuss a wider range of topics as well as substantially increase their knowledge of vocabulary and kanji. This unit also focuses on further increasing students' skills in intercultural communication so that they will be able to communicate in a manner which is culturally as well as linguistically appropriate. Interactive activities and the use of online resources provide students with opportunities to use Japanese as much as possible.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate nuanced aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at advanced level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.

General Assessment Information

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to written reports and recordings only. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs will be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application.

Students will submit a learning portfolio of a collection of learning activities demonstrating their understanding and application of unit content.

The online unit (iLearn) can be accessed at: https://ilearn.mq.edu.au. Students must have regular, reliable access to a computer and the internet to complete this unit. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient. Completion of assessment tasks will also require a computer with Japanese fonts enabled. Basic computer skills (e.g., internet browsing) and skills in word processing in Japanese and English are required. Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions.
