Unit description
This unit requires students to draw on theoretical and discipline knowledge and use these to engage actively in a current and topical policy problem. The students will have opportunities to consult experts and stakeholders in a given policy area and identify relevant evidence, expert opinion and stakeholder views. Students will explore a range of problem definitions and scenarios, and consider alternative policy solutions. Students will develop and present a comprehensive and constructive policy proposal which demonstrates an awareness of ethical, political, social, economic and cultural factors which are significant in the specific policy context. |

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all non-timed written assessments (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc) is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams/quizzes, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

Delivery
POIR8000 is designed to be largely self-directed, with most of the teaching activity undertaken online. The unit consists of four modules, running for 3 weeks each, with resources and activities provided through iLearn.
Each module involves the following rotation:
Module Week 1 (Weeks 1, 4, 7 and 10 of the semester):
Module Week 2 (Weeks 2, 5, 8 and 11 of the semester):
Module Week 3 (Weeks 3, 6, 9 and 12 of the semester):
These activities are done as part of your participation mark for the unit.
Seminars will be held in Weeks 2, 5, 8 and 11. Modules are organised to allow time in the first week of each module to read the set material and identify questions. The second week will include the seminar. Comments and responses in the discussion forums will be made in the second and third week.
In addition, an online Zoom tutorial (1-2 hours) will be held in Weeks 3, 6, 9 and 12.
Resources
All readings for the unit are available via the Leganto Reading resource, available on the iLearn site for the unit. The unit assessments will also require independent and group research of academic and grey literature (policy documents, parliamentary reports etc.) relevant to your policy case study. Students are strongly recommended to make use of the significant resources available through Waranara, the Macquarie University library (https://www.mq.edu.au/about/facilities/library).
The unit will be organised around four modules.
Week 13 will be devoted to completion of the Group assessment task – the Group Policy Report
