Unit description Unit description

This unit examines the role of remuneration and performance management systems in contemporary organisations. Utilising theory and practical examples, the unit will enable students to identify the essential elements required to design a comprehensive remuneration and performance management system that delivers strategic value to a range of stakeholders, including the organisation and workers. Problem solving skills will be emphasised.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify and apply the different approaches to managing performance and reward systems in contemporary organisations.
  • ULO2: Explore and critically evaluate the theoretical underpinnings of performance and reward strategies, applying this theoretical knowledge to solve problems and develop outcomes relating to performance and reward systems within a number of organisational contexts.
  • ULO3: Critically analyse and compare contemporary performance and rewards strategies individually or within a group to identify their strengths, weaknesses and impact on stakeholders and organisational performance.
  • ULO4: Evaluate and communicate the strategic value that performance and reward strategy contribute to the holistic development of contemporary Human Resource Management (HRM) systems in support of delivering organisational goals.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty (written assessments)

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern.

For any late submissions of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, students need to submit an application for Special Consideration.

Professional Practice: Persuasive Communication

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Week 3 onwards
Weighting: 40%

 

The purpose of this assessment is for you to apply course concepts, theory, and empirical evidence to demonstrate your knowledge in the form of a group presentation and group report.

You will present the theoretical and empirical knowledge from the unit, apply it to a real-world organisational example, and provide critical feedback on your fellow students’ work supported by theoretical and empirical evidence.

Skills in focus:

Communication; Collaboration; Critical thinking & problem solving; Discipline knowledge.

Deliverable: Group presentation (15min max) and written report (1,200 words max).

Group and individual assessment

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Explore and critically evaluate the theoretical underpinnings of performance and reward strategies, applying this theoretical knowledge to solve problems and develop outcomes relating to performance and reward systems within a number of organisational contexts.
  • Critically analyse and compare contemporary performance and rewards strategies individually or within a group to identify their strengths, weaknesses and impact on stakeholders and organisational performance.
  • Evaluate and communicate the strategic value that performance and reward strategy contribute to the holistic development of contemporary Human Resource Management (HRM) systems in support of delivering organisational goals.

The purpose of this assessmentis for you to demonstrate your understanding of and ability to apply the course concepts to a real-world scenario. You will do this by critically analysing the problem in a case study and supporting your arguments by relevant theoretical and empirical evidence.

You will address themes of performance management by drawing on the relevant literatures, and explain, discuss, and argue for an appropriate strategy based on your critical appraisal of the available evidence within the context of the unit’s content.

Deliverable: Written report (max 2,000 words excluding supporting materials in appendices).

Individual assessment

 


On successful completion you will be able to:

The purpose of this assessment is for you to critically reflect on your engagement and contributions during tutorials, and to develop a performance management plan a leader should follow that would support your future learning and professional development.

You will identify and analyse your contributions, evaluate your impact on group discussions and activities, and articulate how a leader would most effectively support your continued growth, supported by theoretical and empirical evidence and artefacts from your learning journey.

Skills in focus:

Communication; Work readiness; Critical thinking & problem solving.

Deliverable: Written report (max. 1,500 excluding supporting materials in appendices).

Individual assessment
