Unit description Unit description

This unit provides students with the opportunity to research, discuss and critically reflect upon the foundations and impact of social enterprises (and not-for-profits) and their existing landscape. Social enterprises endeavour to blend two strands of thinking and action: One is the social mission of serving public interest and the community, while the other includes the reliance on for-profit business practices. The aim of the course is to enable students to use theory to discern social enterprises from other types of organisations, to identify social impact solutions that are effective in both strands, understand how they work as well as analyse and recommend ways to scale them. In addition, this unit aims to promote concepts of mindfulness and reflection when analysing current issues.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify and critique the perspectives on social enterprises and social entrepreneurship in local and global contexts.
  • ULO2: Research, analyse and develop social impact solution(s) to a chosen problem.
  • ULO3: Develop skills in and reflect on mindful management.
  • ULO4: Work collaboratively to achieve social impact solutions. 

General Assessment Information

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern.  For any late submissions of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, students need to apply for Special Consideration.

Skills Development: Social Enterprise Analysis

Assessment Type 1: Case study/analysis
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: 12/09/2025
Weighting: 40%

 

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to critically analyse and evaluate how existing social enterprises address real-world social issues, using theory to inform analysis and critique.

You will work individually to examine a social enterprise operating in the same space as your group project, define the social issue it targets, analyse its solutions using relevant theory, and critique its effectiveness by identifying areas for improvement.

Skills in focus:

Critical thinking and problem solving; Global ethical and environmental citizenship.

Deliverable: Written report (max 2,000 words).

Individual assessment

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify and critique the perspectives on social enterprises and social entrepreneurship in local and global contexts.
  • Research, analyse and develop social impact solution(s) to a chosen problem.

Professional Practice: Pitch Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: Weeks 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 in class
Weighting: 30%

 

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to communicate a socially driven business idea with clarity and confidence, and respond effectively to questions in a professional setting.

You will deliver a 4-minute individual pitch based on a section of your group’s social enterprise business plan, followed by a live Q&A in your tutorial.

Skills in focus:

Communication; Work readiness; Global ethical and environmental citizenship.

Deliverable: Presentation (4min) followed by Q&A with accompanying slides.

Individual assessment.

Skills Development: Social Enterprise Venture Plan

Assessment Type 1: Case study/analysis
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: 07/11/2025
Weighting: 30%

 

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to collaboratively design a socially driven business solution to a real-world problem using entrepreneurial frameworks and social enterprise models.

You will work in a group to create a business plan that outlines a novel social enterprise idea, supported by market and industry analysis, a clear implementation strategy, and an appropriate social enterprise typology.

Skills in focus:

Collaboration; Communication; Work readiness; Global ethical and environmental citizenship.

Deliverable: Written report (2,500 words max.).

Group assessment

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify and critique the perspectives on social enterprises and social entrepreneurship in local and global contexts.
  • Research, analyse and develop social impact solution(s) to a chosen problem.
  • Develop skills in and reflect on mindful management.
  • Work collaboratively to achieve social impact solutions.
