Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to increase students' ability to recognise, describe, evaluate, analyse, design and develop information systems from a business professional's viewpoint. The focus is on the creation of business value by improving business processes through the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs). Achievement of the unit's objectives will enable students to play an effective part in information development, management and use, and to communicate effectively with ICT professionals. This unit enables students to gain an understanding of the implications and impacts of the web revolution based on the basic principles of management information systems.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Explain why the business value of information technology is determined by people, hardware, software, data and procedures and describe the key trends of Information and Communications Technology and the implications for individuals, organisations and society.
  • ULO2: Describe how information technology supports business processes (including the risks and benefits of cloud computing, e-business, m-commerce, social computing and outsourcing) and compare and contrast decisions about project management and systems development including the factors that influence management decisions.
  • ULO3: Explain how enterprise content management and electronic records reduce cost, support business operations and assist organisations to meet their regulatory, legal, governance and ethical obligations.
  • ULO4: Demonstrate an understanding of the impacts of constant connectivity and distractions on quality of life, customer service and business operations, privacy and security and interpersonal relationships.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a commitment to working in a team and contribute to achieve the goals of the task at hand.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty (written assessments) 

 

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern.  

 

For any late submissions of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, students need to submit an application for Special Consideration.

Professional Practice: Information Systems Report

Assessment Type 1: Report
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: 19/09/2025
Weighting: 35%

 

The purpose of this assessment is for you to develop your analytical and research skills by examining contemporary information systems topics.

You will write a report addressing current issues in the field of information systems, supported by scholarly references and proper academic writing.

Skills in focus:

  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Discipline knowledge
  • Digital skills

Deliverable: Written report with proper citations and references, as detailed on iLearn.

Individual assessment

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Explain why the business value of information technology is determined by people, hardware, software, data and procedures and describe the key trends of Information and Communications Technology and the implications for individuals, organisations and society.
  • Describe how information technology supports business processes (including the risks and benefits of cloud computing, e-business, m-commerce, social computing and outsourcing) and compare and contrast decisions about project management and systems development including the factors that influence management decisions.

The purpose of this assessment is for you to progressively develop practical skills in information systems.

You will complete a series of learning activities throughout the semester and compile a portfolio that showcases your understanding and application of key information systems concepts.

  • Discipline knowledge

Deliverable: Written portfolio including screenshots and images

Delivery and Resources

Classes

Lectures: To make the best use of our face-to-face time, each class will be divided into two parts. The theoretical component will be delivered as pre-recorded online lectures, which you are required to watch before coming to class. Our face-to-face sessions will be dedicated to practical work, where we will apply the concepts covered in the online lectures. Please ensure you have watched the relevant theoretical lecture prior to attending the practical session (see the timetable).

Textbook

The textbook is available via the Library (Leganto). You are expected to draw on literature from other sources (including magazines, newspapers, business reports, journals, etc.). In the case of research journals, you can search journals and explore the main catalogue or look up databases relevant to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and management. The journals of particular interest include the following (to name a few):

  • Journal of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

  • International Journal of Management and Systems

  • Information Systems

  • Information Systems and e-Business Management

Technology Used
