Unit description Unit description

This unit provides an introduction to human resource management (HRM) in Australia. Content examined includes key policies and practices and contemporary environmental influences on HR strategy formation. Major topic areas are: human resource planning and staffing; employee training and development; performance appraisal; managing a workforce; and workplace health and safety. On completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate the links between the different areas of HRM and the contribution of HRM in businesses.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify and investigate key concepts and theories in Human Resource Management.
  • ULO2: Explain and analyse the connection between Human Resource Management and organisational processes, plans and policies which deliver sustainable organisations.
  • ULO3: Develop and apply effective critical thinking and argument-making skills, both written and verbal.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern.  

For any late submissions of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, students need to submit an application for Special Consideration.

Skills Development: Evaluation of Scholarly Research

Assessment Type 1: Annotated bibliography
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Friday 5th September 2025, 23:55pm
Weighting: 30%

 

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to critically analyse, evaluate, and synthesise scholarly literature to support evidence-based understanding of a topic.

You will summarise and evaluate a selection of scholarly sources, demonstrating your ability to extract key ideas, assess their quality and relevance, and communicate your analysis in a clear and coherent written format.

Skills in focus:

Critical thinking & problem solving; Discipline knowledge.

Deliverable: Written report (1,800 words max.) excluding supporting materials and appendices.

On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Identify and investigate key concepts and theories in Human Resource Management.
  • Develop and apply effective critical thinking and argument-making skills, both written and verbal.

Skills Development: Persuasive Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: Sunday 12th October 2025, 23:55pm
Weighting: 40%

 

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to research, critically analyse, and communicate HRM concepts through both written and visual formats.

You will create an infographic that presents a clear and compelling narrative on a selected HRM topic, supported by a presentation that demonstrates critical thinking, synthesis of theory, and effective argumentation.

Skills in focus:

Communication; Discipline knowledge; Digital skills.

Deliverable: Presentation (7min) of infographic (3-4 pages).

Individual assessment

 


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Explain and analyse the connection between Human Resource Management and organisational processes, plans and policies which deliver sustainable organisations.

Skills Development: Reflection on Individual Engagement

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: Friday 7th November 2025, 23:55pm
Weighting: 30%

 

The purpose of this assessment is for you to critically reflect on your engagement and contributions during tutorials.

You will identify and analyse individual tutorial contributions, and evaluate your impact on group discussions and activities. You will support this with evidence and artefacts from your learning journey.

Skills in focus:

Communication; Work readiness

Deliverable: Written report [max. 1,000 words], excluding supporting materials and appendices.

Individual assessment.
