Unit description Unit description

This unit focuses on enterprise management information systems and the technologies used in their design (including modelling), implementation and maintenance. The alignment of information systems management with business strategy, including socio-technical aspects of systems development are explored. Examples of systems to be managed include enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), Business Intelligence (BI) systems and Groupware. The nexus between social media (SM), cloud computing, mobile devices and big data will be considered. 

Learning in this unit enhances student understanding of global challenges identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) Quality Education; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Competently use information modelling techniques to design business relevant information systems for organisations, focusing on the design of static systems such as databases, along with dynamic systems designed to perform real-time updates.
  • ULO2: Analyse the functionality and business context for enterprise system concepts including ERP, BI, CRM, Enterprise 2.0 and Industry 4.0, and recommend appropriate investments based on the specific business context.
  • ULO3: Use strategic planning with a view to recommending to management the impact of emerging IT trends such as mobile, cloud, social and big data, to generate opportunities for business growth.
  • ULO4: Practice professional etiquette and maturity as individuals and whilst working in a team to deliver IT solutions to the wider enterprise.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate proficiency in leadership, communication, critical analysis, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

General Assessment Information

Release Dates:

  • ERP Modeling and Analysis - to be released no later than week 2
  • Portfolio - to be released no later than week 4
  • BIS Project - to be released no later than week 7

Requirements to Pass this Unit:

To pass the unit you need to obtain a grade of 50% or above overall. There are no hurdle assessments.

Late Submission Policy

  • 5% penalty per day: If you submit your assessment late, 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day (including weekends), up to 7 days.

    • Example 1 (out of 100): If you score 85/100 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 5 marks and receive 80/100.

    • Example 2 (out of 30): If you score 27/30 but submit 1 day late, you will lose 1.5 marks and receive 25.5/30.

  • After 7 days: Submissions more than 7 days late will receive a mark of 0.

  • Extensions:

    • Automatic short extension: Some assessments are eligible for automatic short extension. You can only apply for an automatic short extension before the due date.

    • Special Consideration: If you need more time due to serious issues and for any assessments that are not eligible for Short Extension, you must apply for Special Consideration.

This individual assignment will conduct a case study of an ERP system.

BIS Project

This group assignment will consider a contemporary IT major initiative and develop a business information system solution for a chosen company. 20 of the 50 marks for this assignment will be individual tasks and project presentation that is individually graded. 30 of the 50 marks will be the group work including a technical report.

Class

Each week you should register for 3 hours of seminar classes. All classes start from Week 1. For details of days, times and rooms consult your timetable.

Student feedback from the previous offering of this unit was positive overall, with students pleased with the clarity around assessment requirements and the level of support from teaching staff.
