Unit description Unit description

In this unit, you will work in teams as consulting engineers to develop solutions to real engineering needs or problems. Projects may be multidisciplinary, depending on their scope, and will require you to develop an understanding of the problem context, including the relevant industry and broader socio‑technical factors influencing the engineered system or solution. You will plan, organise, and undertake tasks aligned with professional engineering practice, including analysis, design, communication, and reflection on the engineering process. Learning is demonstrated through collaborative and individual contributions, including a substantial report and presentation. This unit develops your technical and professional competencies, as well as your ability to consider the wider contexts and factors shaping engineering practice.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Requirements to Pass this Unit

To pass this unit you need to: Achieve a total mark equal to or greater than 50% across all assessments.

Hurdle Assessments

There is no hurdle assessment in this unit.

Late Submission Policy

Late assessments are not accepted in this unit unless a Special Consideration has been submitted and approved.

Special Consideration

 The Special Consideration Policy aims to support students who have been impacted by short-term circumstances or events that are serious, unavoidable and significantly disruptive, and which may affect their performance in assessment. If you experience circumstances or events that affect your ability to complete the assessments in this unit on time, please inform the convenor and submit a Special Consideration request through http://connect.mq.edu.au/.

Short Extension

For some assessment types, students are allowed to request an extra 3 calendar days to complete eligible assessments. No reason or evidence is required. In this unit, short extensions are not accepted.

Developing and communicating engineering solutions is central to professional practice. In this assessment, you will work in a group to produce a report that presents an engineering solution to a defined problem. This assessment develops skills in technical communication, collaboration, and the application of engineering principles to real‑world challenges.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in teamwork as professional engineers and objectively evaluate the performance of the team and of your individual peers.
  • Show excellent communication skills to communicate engineering concepts in multiple modes to a range of audiences.

Communicating engineering solutions is an important aspect of professional practice. In this assessment, you will deliver an oral presentation outlining your project and the engineering solution developed for a defined problem. This assessment develops skills in technical communication, synthesis of project outcomes, and presentation of engineering solutions to relevant audiences.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate proficiency in teamwork as professional engineers and objectively evaluate the performance of the team and of your individual peers.
  • Show excellent communication skills to communicate engineering concepts in multiple modes to a range of audiences.
  • Examine and reflect on the socio-technical and other contexts in which engineering is practiced.
  • Exercise advanced professional and self reflective practice.

Delivery and Resources

Lectures and SGTA activities will commence in Week 1, and all teaching activities will be conducted on campus.
