This unit offers an overview of digital forensics and incident response, covering methods, techniques, and tools. It places a significant focus on ethical considerations, legal aspects, and procedural aspects, ensuring that students gain exposure to forensic practices for data collection and recovery. The curriculum equips students with the skills to carry out digital investigations, adhering to the steps of preserving, acquiring, analyzing, and presenting digital evidence.

Learning in this unit enhances student understanding of global challenges identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Descriptions of Assessment Activities and Other Information

  • Submission of Assessments - Assessments need to be submitted via iLearn.
  • Marking of Assessments - Marks and feedback will be provided via iLearn with a turnaround time of 2.5 weeks for the assignments.

Requirements to Pass this Unit

To pass this unit you must achieve a total mark equal to or greater than 50%

Late Submission Policy

  • 5% penalty per day: If you submit your assessment late, 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day (including weekends), up to 7 days.

    • Example 1 (out of 100): If you score 85/100 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 5 marks and receive 80/100.

    • Example 2 (out of 30): If you score 27/30 but submit 1 day late, you will lose 1.5 marks and receive 25.5/30.

  • After 7 days: Submissions more than 7 days late will receive a mark of 0.

  • Extensions:

    • Automatic short extension: Some assessments are eligible for automatic short extension. You can only apply for an automatic short extension before the due date.

    • Special Consideration: If you need more time due to serious issues and for any assessments that are not eligible for Short Extension, you must apply for Special Consideration.

Assessments where Late Submissions will be accepted:

  • Individual Project, Group Project – YES, Standard Late Penalty applies
  • Final Exam - NO, unless Special Consideration is Granted

Special Consideration

This project deals with the recovery of digital evidence for an event. It features a technical report  detailing the investigative steps you followed, ensuring that a client or another analyst can replicate your process. The assignment is to be submitted online.

  • Use appropriate tools and techniques to collect and recover data from a variety of digital sources.
  • Communicate effectively the results of an investigation following professional standards.

Group Project

In this group project, you will evaluate a practical case with respect to digital forensic investigations using appropriate tools and techniques to collect and recover data from a variety of digital sources. It features the submission of a report and a presentation. The assignment is to be submitted online.

Delivery and Resources

COMPUTING FACILITIES

Please note that this is a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) unit. You will be expected to bring your own laptop computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) to the workshop, install and configure the required software, and incorporate secure practices into your daily work (and play!) routines.

CLASSES

Each week you should complete any assigned readings and review the lecture slides in order to prepare for the lecture. There are three hours of lectures and a one-hour workshop every week. The hands-on exercises in works help to reinforce concepts introduced during the lectures. You should have chosen a practical on enrollment. METHODS OF COMMUNICATION
