Unit description Unit description

This unit explores the role and practice of learning and development (L&D) in organisations with an applied industry component. Through engagement with industry partners, the unit provides students with the opportunity to apply L&D principles, concepts, theories and skills to key aspects of the training and development function. Through this, students will develop a broad view of the complex and contested issues that confront organisations when constructing systems of learning and knowledge generation. Students will also gain an appreciation of the strategic choices available and key practical challenges in L&D. Visit Employability Connect for important information on this unit including required preparation and closing dates for PACE activities.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Apply key concepts, theory and principles of HRM in analysing contemporary learning, development and training issues.
  • ULO2: Develop solutions to HR business problems and communicate solutions through the principles of consultancy management.
  • ULO3: Critically assess the strategic choices available in relation to HR concepts and processes in collaboration with others as a member of a student group.

General Assessment Information

Late Submission Penalties

If you submit your assessment late, 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day (including weekends), up to 7 days. Submissions more than 7 days late will receive a mark of 0.

Example 1 (out of 100):

If you score 85/100 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 5 marks and receive 80/100.

Example 2 (out of 30):

If you score 27/30 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 1.5 marks and receive 25.5/30.

Extensions

Automatic short extension: Some assessments are eligible for automatic short extension. You can only apply for an automatic short extension before the due date.

Professional practice: Project planning

Professional practice: Solving people and culture challenges

The purpose of this assessment is to apply Human Resource Management theories and frameworks to real-world business challenges in a collaborative, professional context.
 
You will work in a group to conduct original research into your industry partner’s HRM challenges, identify key issues, and offer actionable, evidence-based recommendations grounded in HRM research. Individually, you will present your own contributions to the report.

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to evaluate your professional contribution and conduct in team-based, industry-engaged learning environments, similar to those encountered in HR consultancy and project-based roles.
 
You will analyse your engagement and contributions during tutorials and project activities, evaluating how you communicated ideas, collaborated with others, and supported collective outcomes. You will assess your role as a team member working on an industry-facing project and reflect on how your actions influenced group processes, decision-making, and project progress. Your analysis will be supported by evidence and artefacts from your learning journey, demonstrating your readiness to transition into professional HR practice.
