Unit description Unit description

This unit explores process modelling with a view to redesigning business processes to achieve organisational productivity targets. Various integration technologies from internal application integration to external e-business integration are covered. A range of integration strategies including data integration, application interfaces, middleware, and the use of modern cloud platforms will be explored.

Learning in this unit enhances student understanding of global challenges identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Apply business process modelling techniques to evaluate business processes and recommend optimised solutions within complex organisational environments.
  • ULO2: Analyse and apply integration technologies to contemporary e-business case studies.
  • ULO3: Evaluate application integration technologies and business process management systems, and design solution architecture for EAI in complex organisational environments.
  • ULO4: Collaborate effectively and professionally to deliver integrated IT solutions for enterprise initiatives.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate proficiency in leadership and communication skills to devise and articulate innovative IT solutions.

General Assessment Information

Release Dates:

  • Case Study Modeling and Analysis - to be released no later than week 2
  • Portfolio - to be released no later than week 4
  • EAI Project - to be released no later than week 7

Requirements to Pass this Unit:

To pass the unit you need to obtain a grade of 50% or above overall. There are no hurdle assessments.

Late Submission Policy

  • 5% penalty per day: If you submit your assessment late, 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day (including weekends), up to 7 days.

    • Example 1 (out of 100): If you score 85/100 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 5 marks and receive 80/100.

    • Example 2 (out of 30): If you score 27/30 but submit 1 day late, you will lose 1.5 marks and receive 25.5/30.

  • After 7 days: Submissions more than 7 days late will receive a mark of 0.

  • Extensions:

    • Automatic short extension: Some assessments are eligible for automatic short extension. You can only apply for an automatic short extension before the due date.

    • Special Consideration: If you need more time due to serious issues and for any assessments that are not eligible for Short Extension, you must apply for Special Consideration.

Case Study Modeling and Analysis

A case study of the introduction of a new technology into an organisation.

EAI Project

Assessment Type 1: Portfolio
Indicative Time on Task 2: 50 hours

Students form groups and select a case study based on given requirements as the basis for a process improvement and optimisation project. Deliverables are a group report and individual graded project presentation.

  • Analyse and apply integration technologies to contemporary e-business case studies.

Class

Each week you should register for 3 hours of seminar classes. All classes start from Week 1. For details of days, times and rooms consult your timetable.

Modelling Tool

For consistency with our Dumas textbook, we will be using the Signavio Modelling Tool, which is available at https://www.signavio.com/news/process-modeling-platform-for-students-and-researchers/. We will use the latest BPMN 2.0 modelling notation.  

Other technology required is MS Word, MS Visio (or draw.io) and MS PowerPoint.  MS Visio is available free of charge from the University collaborative Microsoft Imagine website.

Learning activities have been updated to weekly 3-hour seminar. Assessments have been updated to comply with the new assessment policy.

Student feedback from the previous offering of this unit was positive overall, with students pleased with the clarity around assessment requirements and the level of support from teaching staff.
