Unit description Unit description

This unit is offered on a pass/fail basis. It is designed for students interested in Languages and Cultures who wish to study at a partner university. A program of study at the overseas university must be worked out in advance in consultation with the unit convenor. Students will need to complete additional assessment at Macquarie University on their return from overseas. Students planning to take this option should discuss their plans as early as possible with the unit's staff contact.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: express nuanced understandings of how language and culture interact, and evidence ability to apply language to solving real-word tasks.
  • ULO2: show awareness of differences and similarities between language use in their native language or culture and the target language or culture, as well as thoughtful understandings of how to negotiate difficulties that arise during cross-cultural and/or cross-linguistic interactions
  • ULO3: increase their ability to clearly express, detail, defend, and/or promote ideas in public situations, through their native language and/or target language
  • ULO4: skilfully interact and/or work with others to accomplish complex tasks, identify the dynamics present within diverse groups and use intercultural knowledge to strategically engage with other actors to enhance communities.

General Assessment Information

LATE SUBMISSION OF ASSESSMENT TASKS  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (including essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic. 

The granting of extensions is subject to the university’s Special Consideration Policy. Extensions will not be granted by unit conveners or tutors, but must be lodged through Special Consideration: https://students.mq.edu.au/study/assessment-exams/special-consideration

Students will produce a video wherein they discuss and reflect upon their experiences during the placement. The video should touch on an issue relating to what the student has learned, how they overcame challenges, how the experience related to their overall program of study, and the ways in which they will employ what they learned in the future study and/or community engagement. Additionally, students should discuss their preparation for the experience, and how this impacted their time during the project. The backup supplementary task for this assessment task is a project diary discussing the experience.

  • show awareness of differences and similarities between language use in their native language or culture and the target language or culture, as well as thoughtful understandings of how to negotiate difficulties that arise during cross-cultural and/or cross-linguistic interactions
