Unit description Unit description

This unit is designed to develop skills in all areas of Japanese language (reading, writing, listening and speaking) to a higher level of proficiency. Students learn to discuss a wider range of topics as well as substantially increase their knowledge of vocabulary and kanji. This unit also focuses on further increasing students' skills in intercultural communication so that they will be able to communicate in a manner which is culturally as well as linguistically appropriate. Interactive tutorials and the use of online resources provide students with opportunities to use Japanese as much as possible.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Japanese language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate many aspects of Japanese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both Japanese and in English.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty 

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of‚ 0 (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. 

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (including essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, and recordings, etc). written reports. Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as quizes, tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs, etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a few question or topic.

Language Test

The language test requires students to demonstrate knowledge of the unit content in the first half of the session.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at intermediate level.

The final test covers comprehensive knowledge and use of the entire content of the course.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Japanese at intermediate level.

Delivery and Resources

UNIT REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS  

  • You should spend an average of 12 hours per week on this unit. This includes listening to lectures prior to Practical and Tutorial, completing weekly tasks as detailed in iLearn, participating in Ilearn discussion forums and preparing assessments.  

  • Internal students are expected to attend all Practical and Tutorial sessions, and external students are expected to make significant contributions to on-line activities.  

  • In most cases students are required to attempt and submit all major assessment tasks in order to pass the unit.  

  • No textbook is required for this unit. The coursenotes, presentation slides, and other materials are available for download in iLearn.

TECHNOLOGY USED AND REQUIRED  

  • Completion of assessment tasks will also require a computer with Japanese fonts enabled. Basic computer skills (e.g., internet browsing) and skills in word processing in Japanese and English are required.

  • This unit has an online presence. Login is via: https://ilearn.mq.edu.au/  

  • Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.  

  • Information about IT used at Macquarie University is available at  http://students.mq.edu.au/it_services/  

  • Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.
